MC ELVANEY’S WASTE & RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL
Donaghmoyne 0-14, Currin 0-11.
Donaghmoyne booked their place in the semi-final of the intermediate football championship but they were pushed to their very limits by a battling Currin in this riveting contest that built to a very exciting finish in Aughnamullen on Saturday evening last. Donaghmoyne would have been regarded as favourites going into this game but they had to dig deep in the final minutes for the points that eventually saw them over the line as a hugely determined Curran who brought a high degree of intensity to this game, repeatedly questioned their credentials as favourites throughout this intriguing contest. Currin started well and raced into a 3 points lead and at the end of an absorbing 1st half they led by 2 points 0-6 to 0-4, with Donaghmoyne playing second fiddle in practically every department. However 4 minutes into the 2nd half they found themselves 2 in arrears as Donaghmoyne put in a lightning start on the resumption with four quick fire points. Donaghmoyne threatened to take command of this game on a number of occasions but each time Currin roared back to retake the initiative and they took the lead on 3 further locations to lead by one with 8 minutes of normal time remaining. That was achieved too, despite being reduced to 14 players in the final minutes of the 1st half when Kieran Kearns picked up a 2nd yellow card, but in the end Donaghmoyne rallied strongly for 4 unanswered points in the final 8 minutes, to come from being one in arrears to winning by 3 and breathing a huge sigh of relief when it was all over.
