Senior Team
A tight derby was forecast last Sunday for the championship clash with Eire Og and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It was hard , fast and totally enthralling stuff with both teams going for the jugular from the off. Eire Og definitely took the honours in the first half with a deserved lead into the break by four points. The team talk at the break certainly gave the Seans food for thought as they returned to field for the second half like caged animals being released. Within minutes of the restart they had recaptured lead with goals and points shooting in like loose fire at the OK Corral. Tempers were fraying slightly as the intensity set in the closing quarter and Eire Og stuck to their task and matched the Seans score for score. It wasn’t until injury time when , super sub James Murphy, made a darting run through the Smithboro defence and cool as you like slotted over the wining score. A win by the minimum margin , nether the less , a place in the next stage of the championship and promotion hopes alive and well.
Minors
Our minors had their final league match against Latton last Tuesday night, with both teams are due to meet each other in the up coming championship final. In goals was Tommy Mc Phillips with Ryan Connolly playing full forward. James Clerkin was at full back yet he moved forward to score a super goal. Marty Mc Guirk was tenacious as usual but received a black card in the last 5 minutes. Latton played a sweeper system and James Murphy counteracted this by pushing forward and marking him well. Paddy Mc Phiilps scored some great points and attacked with Shane Kelly. in midfield. Aaron Mc Nally and Mark Murphy won a lot of kick outs and Jason Kearns was very accurate and picked off some good scores. Damon Hagan was also half forward and scored a great goal. Darren Morgan at full forward also got a goal. Oisin Mc Kenna had a good game and contributed scores, our only sub Darragh Maguire came on and performed admirably. Dermot Lynch refereed the match in a common sense manner and correctly put players off the pitch until they retrieved their gum shields. We must re iterate that it is mandatory to wear gum shields at training and for matches at all levels so this was a valuable lesson learned. The game was on a knife edge up until the last minute with the Sean’s winning by 2 points on a score of 3-14 to 2-15.
This now leaves this team in a league semi final.
