Castleblayney Hurling Club Notes

By Majella Boyd Thu 11th Aug

Well done to our Senior team who won the Shield final against Clontibret 3-15  to 1-6.

It was a hard fought match to the end and Clontibret never give up the challenge.

The game started at a very steady pace with Hugh Byrne torturing the Clontibret defence.

Niall Garland popped over the first point and Fergal Rafter followed with a free.

Hugh Byrne then took control and scored the next three points and in the 13 minute of the game smashed home a goal.

The game was tough and hard with the Blayney lads taking some heavy knocks but to stood tall and Nathan Adair put over a fabulous point in the 15 minute.

Fintan Finegan has been a star forward for Blayney all year and scored one of the best goals ever seen in the Blayney jersey when he smashed home a speeding cross from Hugh Byrne on the volley. Niall Garland and Fergal Rafter scored the next two points and at half time the score was Blayney 2-8  to 0-2.

The second half was equally god with some fine fielding from Fergal O’ Dowd and who scored some excellent points.

You could see the Mc Gurgan touch in him. Fergal Rafter pointed the next two frees and Brian Mc Guigan and Peter Treanor tied up mid field.

Fergal Rafter following up with brilliant goal in the 12 minute of the second half and finished up scoring 1-5 in total. Brian Mc Guigan scored a long range point in the 13 minute.

Clontibret kept up the fight to the very end however a brace of points followed from Fergal Rafter, Niall Garland, Peter Treanor and Tony Forde to finish out the contest.

Our full back line of Jack Deasy, Eoin Leonard and Brian Flanagan stood strong and Jim Mc Hugh giving a man of the match display at centre half back supported by Mr. Consistency Stephen Forde who was brilliant throughout.

Pauric Malone went in for the injured Nathan Adair and this young player is one to watch. Kevin Mc Cooey, Conor Mc Nally, Brian Connolly and Niall Flanagan were introduced and give a really good account of themselves.

Wayne Funcheon, Cormac Mc Nally, Jack Murphy, James Lavelle, Mark Treanor.

Wishing Mark Treanor a speedy recovery and best of luck to all of our dual players in the Football Championship next Saturday evening against Monaghan Harps.

A big thank you to our Secretary Catriona Quirk, Peter Mc Caughey our first Aid, Jason Hughes our coach and Mattie Martin, Paul Duffy our selectors.

Well done to all concerned.
