Aughnamullen March On

By Mary McEneaney Sat 20th Aug

MC ELVANEY’S WASTE & RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Aughnamullen 0-9, Killanny 0-6.

The introduction of substitute Micheal Bannigan at the start of the second-half was a key factor in this Aughnamullen victory that gets their championship prospects back on track, in this low-key, low scoring and at times scrappy affair that was played in blustery and greasy conditions in Inniskeen on Friday evening last. It is a result too that puts Killanny out of this year’s intermediate football championship and they will be disappointed as they showed plenty of outfield endeavour but just failed to finish sufficiently well, although the difficult cross field wind was a factor in both sides’ tally of wides. Killanny had somewhat the better of the exchanges in the 1st half at the end of which they led by a point but Bannigan’s introduction to the Aughnamullen attack give them more options and his accuracy from play and frees saw him register four vital scores that helped push his side on to victory. Prior to the start a minutes silence was held as a mark of respect to the late Rita Lennon, Inniskeen and the late Paddy Mulholland, former Inniskeen and Monaghan player.
