Under-Sixteen League! The Emmets sixteen footballers were in Castleblayney on Thursday evening for round six of the league competition. A good early start from the Carrick boys came in the shape of a goal and two points. As time was approaching half time the Emmets had two chances to extend the lead but both were off target and it was the opposition that rounded off the half with a point from play to leave the score 1-06 to 0-05 in favour of the Emmets. Straight after the break Donnach Swinburne put Emmet’s five-up but two hopeful shots fell into the hands of the Faughs goalkeeper and were cleared. As the half the inconceivable happened and the Emmets found themselves behind for the first time when Faughs worked their way through for a splendid goal (1-08 to 1-09) Tadgh O’Callaghan levelled matters with a point. Castleblayney stole away once more and added a point from play to edge ahead until Donnach Swinburne popped over a free-kick. the unthinkable happened once more as a Blayney forward was brought down on goal and a penalty was awarded; which was slotted home to seemingly win the match. Donnach Swinburne did get a free-kick over the bar with time practically running out. Final Score Emmets 1-11 Faughs 2-11. Points by Ryan O’Connor and the flying Dylan Ward extended the lead to seven-points but Clones never stopped and subsequently reduced that margin to four points at the break! (3-06 to 2-05) After the break the Emmets took good advantage of the breeze and scored seven points without reply in fact the second half belonged to the Emmets scoring a total ten points while limiting the opposition to just a goal from a penalty and a point from play. Senior Football Championship! From a perfect day to a painful day; what a difference a week can make! There was no warm-down; no team-huddle; no buzz; the only similarity to the previous Sunday was the sunshine. The Carrickmacross players took the long walk up the steps towards their dressing room in St Mary’s Park after a terrible defeat that led to many questions and comments from the beleaguered Emmet supporters after a most disappointing display against Latton in the Senior Championship. (3-14 to 0-11) Latton with 3-11 from play to Emmets 0-05 tells its own story!
