Carrickmacross Notes

Minor Football League! The Emmets minor team were back in Emmet Park for their fourth game in the league on Friday evening against Donaghmoyne; in a top of the table clash. Playing into the town end in the first half the Emmets played some good football and at stages were camped in the opponents half without due reward and by half time were winning by 1-06 to 0-05 for well-deserved lead. Ryan O’Connor with a goal and a point; Karl McMenamin two-points; Tadgh O’Callaghan two-points and Oran Kiernan with one-point were the marksmen. The four-point lead was soon tagged back to a single point early in the second half when Donaghmoyne got two points from play and another from a convenient free-kick. However the Emmets didn’t panic and rallied on courageously with their own style of play; even when events on the field weren’t going their way; they battled on regardless and were unduly unlucky with some of their play. Donaghmoyne levelled the game with a point from play barely a minute after the Emmets hit the post at the other end (1-06 to 0-09) and they went one- point up from another free-kick. Again lady-luck eluded the home side and when a short kick-out was intercepted; just a matter of yards the Emmets goals; the Donaghmoyne forward got possession and made no mistake with what turned out the decisive goal and the winning goal. Emmets pulled a point back as the game approached the long whistle and they united together for a final fling in search of an equalising goal but the nearest they got was free-kick which was lobbed into the danger area only to be scrambled clear. The final whistle sounded with the goal difference in tact 1-07 to 1-10.  Donaghmoyne is a balanced side; strong in areas and deservedly in pole position in this particular league with the younger Emmets sharing second spot. Emmets; Robbie McCluskey; Patrick Mitchell; Jack Gillick; Caolin Martin; Peter McElroy; Tiarnan McCourt; Cathal McEnaney; Ryan O’Connor; Oisin Marron; Cormac O’Hanlon; Rohan McMahon; Oran Kiernan; Tadgh O’Callaghan; Dylan Ward; Karl McMenamin; Substitution; Luke Donnelly.

Vote of Sympathy! At the last club meeting “The Emmets” passed a vote of sympathy to Patsy Connolly and family on the death his beloved wife Kathleen who went to her eternal rest recently. Knowing Kathleen; was knowing a person of a kind, courteous manner her warmth nature was evident whenever you had the pleasure of her company and her family and friends will miss her presence in the community and the home. We know the great loss this is to Patsy and we offer our condolence to our former club officer who in older days was a great Emmet! The younger generation may not know that Patsy holds two Minor County Championship medals and a Junior Championship medal with the Emmets and he also received the “Hall of Fame” award for his contribution to the club. Well known as a referee he officiated at the Minor Championship; Dr Ward Cup; Eoin Ward Cup; Fr Hackett Cup finals as well as the 1978 Senior Final. Our thoughts are also with her sons Paddy and Martin and daughters Alice and Margaret on the sorrowful loss of their mother! “Suaimhneas síoraí do d’anam”
