Rockcorry Notes

Good Luck Monaghan

The final round of the Allianz National Football league takes place this Sunday 3rd April when Monaghan host Donegal at Castleblayney and throw-in time is 2pm. It’s going to be an epic battle so get ready to show your support and cheer on the Monaghan team to get across the line and retain their Division 1 status. On behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our best wishes to all the players and the back room management team. Good luck lads.

Platinum Tanks RFL Division 2

Our reserve footballers played Sean McDermott’s last Saturday 26th March, in the Platinum Tanks reserve football league division 2 and if games were awarded for effort, commitment and grit then they would have fully deserved the spoils. Regardless of what the scoreboard shows the lads undoubtedly showed plenty of honest endeavour and pride wearing the ‘Green & White’ jersey and I have to say there were some really great individual battles all over the field. The game was played at a really high and competitive pace in some appalling conditions with a strong wind and heavy rain that left a lot of surface water on the field. I have to applaud all the players from both clubs for putting on an outstanding show in very difficult surroundings. However, as we all know the main objective of the game is to out-score your opponents and Sean McDermott’s proved far too clinical in front of the posts to secure the league spoils on a final score-line Rockcorry 1-2 Sean McDermott’s 1-12. The reserve footballers are back in action this Saturday 2nd April when they travel to play Doohamlet at 6.30pm.

Monaghan Electrical IFL

The next outing for our senior footballers will be on Saturday 9th April when they travel to play Emyvale. The exact date and throw-in time has to be officially confirmed so watch this space for details.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12

Our under 12 footballers are back in action this Saturday 2nd April when they host Tyholland at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and the game has a throw-in time of 2pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

Last Saturday 26th March our under 14 footballers travelled to play Tyholland in their opening match of the Gerry’s Prepared Veg division 4 league campaign. Unfortunately, on the day a better balanced Tyholland outfit proved too strong and secured the spoils. The first half was closely contested as both sides displayed some promising skill and passion but we found it difficult to register scores. Tyholland started brightly and set a strong early pace and held a 1-2 to 0-0 advantage after five minutes. We weathered the storm and gradually found our rhythm and by the break the scoreboard showed Tyholland 1-7 to Rockcorry 1-1. The early exchanges of the second half really belonged to the home side as they started and finished well producing a superb performance and notched up 1-3 to lead by 2-10 to 1-1 midway through the half. In fairness, our lads never gave up and they fought back admirably and enjoyed a mini-purple patch that yielded an impressive 2-3. Tyholland tapped over a late point towards the end of the match to seal the victory on a score-line Tyholland 2-11 Rockcorry 3-4. Their next game is on Saturday 9th April when they take on Sean McDermott’s at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 2pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

The Under 16 footballers will start their season on Thursday 14th April when they travel to Smithboro to play Eire Og and the game has a throw-in time of 7pm.

Minor Football League Division 3

Our minor footballers will get their first taste of action on Tuesday 5th April when they travel to Threemilehouse to play Sean McDermott’s and throw-in time is 6.30pm.

Parish Variety Concert

The Parish Variety Concert takes place this Sunday 3rd April in St. Mary’s Hall. The Parish is blessed with some outstanding talent ranging from individual solo singers, ballad groups, dancers, musicians, actors, comedians and so on and they have all come together to put on another amazing show packed full of fun and entertainment. Tickets are currently on sale costing a reasonable €10 for adults and the Parish would deeply appreciate your support of this event so please do not let the Parish down and come out and support it.

Scoil Mhuire Proclamation Day

As part of the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising every Primary School received a brand new Tricolour and a copy of the Proclamation. The 15th March was known as ‘Proclamation Day’ and the boys and girls at the local Scoil Mhuire held a ceremony, to which family and friends were invited to attend, and it involved reading the Proclamation, dancing, singing, poetry, and music. In addition, the kids were invited to write their own version of the proclamation setting out their vision and ideals for the future. When that was all done the ceremony finished with the raising of the national flag and I just want to say a massive well done to all the boys and girls, their teachers and their parents for a wonderful day.
