Eirgrid Ulster Under-21 Football Championship Final

Monaghan v Tyrone, Wednesday, 8.00, Armagh

Monaghan will be bidding to win the Ulster U-21 FC for the first time since 1999 when they take on Tyrone in Wednesday night’s final at the Athletic Grounds.

Convincing wins over Fermanagh and Armagh have Monaghan through to a first final at this level since 2007, when they lost out to the Orchard County. Holders Tyrone have come through tough tests against Cavan and Donegal to qualify for another decider. Monaghan, who are managed by former Tyrone player Ciarán McBride, memorably came from behind to edge out their neighbours in the 2013 Ulster MFC Final, although the Red Hand County won both meetings of these teams in this year’s Shamrock Cup, including the decider.

Ryan McAnespie, Conor McCarthy and Barry McGinn all featured in the Allianz NFL for Monaghan, who will also be looking for big performances from Kevin Loughran, Dessie Ward, Fearghal McMahon and Mikey Murnaghan. Tyrone, who again have Feargal Logan, Peter Canavan and Brian Dooher in their management team, can call on Cathal McShane, Lee Brennan, Frank Burns, Mark Kavanagh and goalkeeper Seán Fox from last year’s All-Ireland U-21 winning side. The former two have played at senior level under Mickey Harte, as has David Mulgrew.

Another great battle between these sides could be in store.
