Emmet’s Championship! In the week that the Emmets flag was carried into Market Square for the 1916 celebrations it is important to the club that we remember the only county championship final that was played in that remarkable year: Not alone to honour the Emmets players involved but also to put the record straight! The following is a short summary of that great day! Doohamlet was the venue on Sunday (1st October 1916) for three matches; one being the Senior Football final of 1915 between Carrickmacross and Killeevan. There was a very large attendance and the weather was beautiful. Splendid arrangements were made by the county secretary Mr Patrick Lonergan (Carrickmacross) Proceedings opened with a hurling match between North and South (Carrickmacross) which the South won by 3-02 to 2-01. Carrickmacross assumed the upper hand, in the senior football final; running out winners by 1-05 to 0-02 points. The day’s sport was wound up with a trial game between the County Senior and Junior teams; which ended with a draw at 1-03 each. There was no 1916 final because it was abandoned by the County Board in January 1917 due to the lack of time. The “official records” for the senior championship should read! (1915. Carrickmacross Emmets) (1916. No final) and not as currently published!
Emmets Reserves! The team played their second game in the league at Emmet Park on Saturday against Eire Og. The conditions on a wet and wintery March evening would do justice to any day in January. Whether the Emmets did justice to themselves is another question for they struggled to find any tempo or rhythm to their play and only occasionally threatened with any conviction of note. The visitors found plenty of space with plenty of loose men who caused plenty of problems for the home defence! Half Time score Eire Og 1-04 Emmets 0-05 The second Half! Two points for the visitors put a different appearance on proceedings while two wides from the Emmets didn’t help matters. A Sean Downey phase saw him come to the fore, a point from play; another from play; a free-kick converted and one missed; That was as good as it got; no other Emmets player scored in the second half and four more points for Eire Og; two from free-kicks and two from play; put an end to any hope of a home victory. Emmets: Robbie Honney; Ferdia Holland; Adrian McCluskey; Padraig Marron; Ciaran Ward; Conor Duffy; Aaron Murray; John G Conlon; David Eakins (0-01) Paddy Larney; Aaron Jones (0-02) Ryan Carolan, Jack Ogle (0-01) Jamie Gartlan (0-01) Sean Downey (0-03) Subs: Laurence McNally; Adam Waller; Cian Matthews; Ritchie Cromwell; Kevin Bashford: Next game is this Saturday at 6-30pm in Emmet Park against Clones!
Emmets Collection! Thanks to all the Emmet members who helped with the Church-Gate collection at the weekend which was organised on behalf of the Juvenile Committee. A special mention to everyone including the people that supported us and gave generously to the cause; which was for benefit of the young Emmets coaching fund:
Young Emmets! The under-fourteen Emmets had a big win against Gaeil Truicha in the second round of the league competition at Emmet Park. The team played some fine football and such was the lead towards the end that everyone got a game. It was a sound performance coming off their opening defeat in round one and brings them well into the picture for the remaining games! The under sixteen footballers make their seasonal debut in Magheracloone on this Thursday night at 6-30pm in League Division 1 and hopefully they can commence their competition with a win in this local fixture! On Saturday the Spring Leagues continue for the Emmets on Saturday when both teams make the trip to Monaghan to take on the Harps; first game at 2-00pm in Zone A followed by the Zone B team at 3-15pm. On Monday night the under-fourteen championship quarter final is fixed for Emmet Park where Magheracloone are the visitors and a cracking game is envisaged!
