The Voice of Ireland Final:

On Sunday evening, the community of Aghabog and further afield gathered in the clubhouse to watch The Voice of Ireland final. Fingers and toes were crossed as Michael took to the stage to perform Superman and 7 Years but those same fingers were soon sending multiple texts as voting commenced. The large crowd cheered as local faces were spotted on the big screen. When Michael made it to the final two, the tension was unbearable. Even manicured nails were been bitten. It was like the musical equivalent of Italia 90 and David O’Leary stepping up to take that penalty. If the wait was agony, it was a case of absolute ecstasy when RTE’s Kathryn Thomas finally declared Michael the winner. There were scenes of wild celebration in the clubhouse as cheers and roars went up and tears of joy were shed by young and old. It was a truly special night for our community and the club was delighted to host it. The club would like to extend our thanks to Martina Leonard who was MC, Fausto Lavery who provided the big screen, Pascal McGorman for assisting and finally to Ciara McPhillips and Noel McCarville who organised the event and Ciara for sponsoring the big screen.

The Homecoming Hundreds of people turned out on Monday evening to welcome Michael Lawson back to Aghabog. The clubhouse was unable to contain the crowds which spilt out into the grounds. Cars lined the road to Latnamard as people travelled to meet Michael. Michael was greeted by great noise when he arrived and was immediately in demand for selfies and autographs. Arts Minister Heather Humphreys was the first to welcome Michael, acknowledging his vote getting ability and spoke of mum Philomena’s pride. Club Chairman Damien Murphy described it as a great result. Proud mum, Philomena paid an emotional thanks to everybody in the local community who has supported Michael along the way. Martina Leonard and Josie Cusack who’d been championing Michael on local radio all week both spoke of our enormous pride for what Michael had achieved. Ciara McPhillips recalled her time babysitting Michael as a child and thanked him for the community spirit he’d brought to the Aghabog, Newbliss,

Killeevan areas and the entire county. Noel McCarville emotionally recalled some of Michael’s first appearances on the big stage representing Aghabog in Scor. Fr Corrigan spoke warmly of Michael’s personality whilst former principal of Latnamrd NS, May O’Donaghue, spoke of Michael’s initial singing of Bob the Builder! Homemade posters, in particular one from the pupils of Latnamard NS adorned the walls as The Voice of Ireland 2016 winner performed his new single 7 Years to widespread acclaim from all in attendance.

The clubhouse has witnessed many great occasions since it was built just over 16 years ago, some relating to activities on the pitch and many away from the GAA sphere altogether. It sometimes takes occasions like last Sunday and Monday night to bring home to us just what an important amenity it is to our entire local community. It’s perhaps worth bearing that in mind as we continue with our objective of improving our club facilities with our upcoming club draw.
