As many of you are aware Owen Lennon announced his retirement from Gaelic Football today both Club and County. We thank him for the many years of enjoyment he gave to Monaghan supporters all over the world since 2002. Please see his statement in full below:
Today I announce my retirement from Gaelic football. Due to an ongoing ankle problem I’ve been medically advised to hang up the boot’s. I’m certainly going to miss it but, it’s been an honour to wear the number 8 jersey for so many years with club and county but unfortunately all good things must come to an end.
Of course there have been good and bad days but thankfully the good outweighed the bad ones and I have made some friends for life. I’ve been so lucky to have played along with such talented and highly motivated groups of players with the county, and also with my club Latton O Rahilly’s. Thankfully we had some great days in Clones that I’ll never forget.
I’d like to thank all the people who invested time in me to make me a better player, from past school teachers, club and county managers and college mentors. I’d also like to thank my wife, friends and family for all their support.
I also like to thank the Monaghan county board and the Latton committee for their help and support over the years and the medical teams for all their work and advice.
Finally I would like to wish Malachy O Rourke plus the management team and players all the best in the year ahead and I’ll be supporting them all the way.
Is mise,
Owen.
