Cavan v Monaghan, Wednesday, 8.00, Kingspan Breffni Park

Monaghan finish their Dr. McKenna Cup campaign with a local derby away to Cavan on Wednesday night.

Defeats against Ulster University and Armagh have left Monaghan out of contention, while Cavan are top of the group after wins over the same opponents and are within touching distance of a semi-final place. Cavan won a competitive encounter at this stage last year, before Monaghan, of course, reversed that result with a late comeback in their Ulster SFC quarter-final.

Malachy O’Rourke has handed out 11 senior inter-county debuts in the last fortnight and is expected to continue to experiment in this one as Monaghan look ahead to the start of the Allianz National Football League at the end of this month. The four Rockcorry players who featured in the Armagh game last weekend are unlikely to appear, just a week and a half away from their All-Ireland Club JFC semi-final.

Cavan have Seánie Johnston and David Givney back in their panel (with Givney returning from suspension for this one). They can also call on the likes of Niall McDermott, Martin Reilly, Niall Murray, Dara McVeety and former St. Macartan’s College student Tom Hayes, who all featured in the 2015 championship clash.
