Passing of Former Players
Two former Clontibret players have passed away in the past week. The late Brian Sherry Tullycomaskey spent most of his life in England but is remembered as an enthusiastic player who came on to the senior team in the mid 1950s. He played most of his football at corner back but actually started out in the full forward line playing there in the 1956 County Final when Clontibret beat Ballybay in Gavan Duffy Park. In the 1958 final at Ballybay he was corner back when Clontibret claimed their seventh championship title at the expense of Donaghmoyne and in 1959 was again at corner back when Ballybay claimed back the county title after a replay.
The late Macartan Murphy from Aghabog played with Clontibret for a few years in the mid 1960s and is remembered as a strong talented midfielder. He was at midfield on the team which defeated Scotstown in the 1966 Eoin Ward Cup final which was actually played in March 1967.
