Sean Mc Dermotts Notes

By Mary McEneaney Thu 17th Sep

Seniors:

Our seniors travelled the short distance on Sunday last to Aghabog. This is always a tricky fixture and one where nothing less than a victory could be costly in the race for promotion. It certainly lived up to its billing with both sides going at it from the start. Goals and points were the order of the day and with numerous exchanges. The Seans went in at half time 2 points to the good. The second half started with exchanges of points , however the visitors maintained an advantaged which was not to be caught. Even up until the twentieth  minute only one score separated the sides, although the scoreline changed dramatically in the space of six minutes. A brace of goals from Brian McQuaid , Patrick Kieran and Niall Kearns changed the complexion on the score board and somewhat belied the closeness of the game. It was a good away win and two more points on the board.

U16’s

Wednesday week last our U16 team, under the guidance of Martin Kiearn and Noel Rice, took on Patrick Emmetts in the Div.4 League Final in Tyholland. This was a huge week for the clubs juveniles of the club. Our team started well and stayed in touch with their opponents, in what was a fast end to end match from the off. The Seans were well in the game by half time and trailed by only two points. However scores in the second half were much harder to get and while we defended like lions, we could not stem the opponents scoring. Eventually Patrick Emmetts ran out winners by seven points, however this was not a true reflection on the possession and play by the Seans. A big congratulations to the players and the management for getting to the final and working so hard all year. This is a learning curve and hopefully this squad of players can build on this experience and bounce back next season.

U14’s

Our hopes for juvenile silverware lay with our  U14’s who travelled to Clones on Saturday last to take on Tyholland in the league final. This was a huge task as Tyholland had been the strongest team in the division all season. Our young players played their hearts out , and although conceding numerous scores early in the first half , they battled hard to within a couple of scores of their opponents at the start of the second half. Unfortunately the tide was impossible to turn and Tyholland pushed on to record their League Final victory. The disappointment and sadness on the faces of the team at the final whistle was heart breaking. They and their management came together at the beginning of the season and hatched a plan to bring home silverware and it so nearly paid off. Congratulations to the team on reaching the final, as this was a wonderful achievement on its own. A big thanks to the management for their hard work and commitment during the season. These bunch lads are only starting and success will come.
