Rockcorry Notes

By Majella Boyd Tue 28th Jul

Sincerest Condolences

On behalf of everyone in the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to convey our deepest sympathies to the McCabe family, relatives and friends on the passing of Paddy Joe McCabe. Paddy was a former player of the club and recipient of our Hall of Fame Award in 1998. May he rest in eternal peace.

Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship

If you’re a right footed footballer they say the left foot is only for “standing on”! However, as events transpired last Sunday (26th July) when our senior footballers travelled to Scotstown to play Aghabog in the Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship it was a case of “my left foot” becoming the so called hero of the night as we notched up some impressive scores with the so called weaker foot (if you’re a right footed player that is!) Sadly, the game was played in appalling, atrocious and awful weather conditions with a strong wind and heavy rain that left a lot of surface water on the field. I have to applaud all the players from both clubs for putting on an outstanding show of football in such cruel and horrible surroundings and congratulate the lads who dug deep to seal the win on a final score-line Rockcorry 2-15 Aghabog 0-6. Health & Safety audits has gained a lot of attention in recent weeks and months and a lot of consideration has been focused on the safety of individual club grounds with regards to the general public…and rightly so. However, when it comes to the health & safety and wellbeing of our players, which incidentally I regard as one of the biggest and most important assets of our association, where do we draw the line? With all the rainfall last Sunday the playing surface was unsafe and yet we expected, demanded and insisted on our players to play an important championship match in what can only be described as dreadful and dangerous conditions!  It was shocking, but thanks be to God, while there were a few collisions, all players after an exhausting match were able to walk off the field with no serious harm or injuries and in my eyes that’s the most important thing. Well done lads it was a great team performance and a great result and keep up the good work.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 League

Unfortunately, due to other commitments last Saturday (25th July) I was not able to attend the under 12 match against Eire Og. I understand that the boys & girls put in a very good team performance against a formidable Eire Og side. They played well together and linked up with some impressive moves and finished with some nice scores to secure a comfortable victory. Well done to all the boys & girls, their team management Paul McCormick & Conor Brannigan and all the parents for their support.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 League

They are back in action on Saturday 1st August with a home game against Patrick Emetts at 12 noon and on Thursday 13th August they have a home game against Doohamet and throw-in time is 7.30pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg  – Under 16

The next outing for the under 16 team in the league campaign is against Patrick Emetts on Thursday 30th July at 7.30pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg Under 16 Championship

Our under 16 footballers played Toome last  Thursday (23rd July), in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Championship semi-final and while their determination was very evident and they displayed plenty of spirit all the way through this thrilling and competitive match it was sadly not enough as Toome secured the victory.  This was an absorbing encounter and it would be unfair to select any one or two players because the entire team put in an impressive performance. They all fought and worked hard for each other and demonstrated great teamwork with some dazzling moves up the field that ended with some delightful scores. However, Toome just had that extra spark and power and when we were pressing towards the end of the match they were able to up their performance and they grabbed the initiative with two late goals to seal the win on a score-line Toome 5-12 Rockcorry 3-12 and on behalf of the club we wish them they very best in the decider. Hard luck lads, you came so close but in the end Toome had a wee-bit more in the tank!  It’s hard to walk away empty handed but you can be proud of your efforts because it was a gutsy performance and while you didn’t make it across the line, I can honestly say, you certainly didn’t let yourselves or the club down because you left everything out on the pitch this evening and when you do that no-one can ask for any-more. Keep those heads held high and be ready for the next one…because there’s always a next one!

Minor Football League Division 3 Shield

The minor footballers are back in action on Tuesday 21st July when they travel to play Emerald Sarsfields and throw-in time is 7.30pm.
