Clones Notes

By Mary McEneaney Thu 23rd Jul

Huge comhghairdeas to Fintan Kelly and the Monaghan team on winning their second Ulster title in three years.  It’s been a momentous few days and it’s easy to run out of superlatives to describe this team.  It’s hugely difficult to put into words the joy, euphoria and above all else the sense of pride that we feel for this amazing bunch of players.  Talent, heart, drive, resolve and that never say die attitude for the lads their just desserts on Sunday.  Having conquered Clones, Big Mal and the team will be keen to conquer Croke Park too.  That certainly will be another occasion to savor and we’ll all be there to cheer on the team and enjoy a fascinating summer of football with our beloved Farney Army.

It’s a wonderful occasion for Fintan who joins Ciaran and Brendan Murray who also have two  Ulster Medals.  Ciaran and Brendan were both in Clones on Sunday and full of praise for their fellow Clone.  They like us won’t mind if Fintan increase his tally of medals in the coming seasons.

Whilst a lot of the plaudits are going to the players and management for the success on Sunday,  it would be remiss of me not to mention the men who despite huge adversity with the weather during the week had the pitch looking absolutely immaculate.  Tommy and Val you’ve done yourselves, families, club and the parish proud.

Finally a word of thanks to all the volunteers who gave of their time on Sunday and during the week to make sure everything went off so well .  Your efforts don’t go unnoticed and are invaluable to the success if the club on the day.

The minors had a great win over Aughnamullen in the Championship Quarter Final on a scoreline of Clones 3-16 Aughnamullen 1-12. We started the game quite slowly and found ourselves 1-5 to 0-1 down with 10 mins played but great credit to the boys they never panicked, stuck to the game plan and played some good football for the rest of the half with some great scores coming from James Mealiff, Evan Mulvanny, Eoin McQuaid, Ryan Rooney and Ollie Clerkin. HT score was 1-8 a piece. In the 2nd half our defence marshalled by David Jilistratovs, Darragh McDermott, Matthew Newell and Daniel Freeman were on top and we really took charge around the middle of the field with Eoin McQuaid and Fabian Beggan giving a great display of fielding and Luke Reihill and Chris Cadden working hard, this gave us a great platform to drive forward and play some nice attacking football with James Mealiff, Ryan Rooney and Evan Mulvanny in fine scoring form with James bagging himself 3-5 from play. We finished very strongly which was pleasing and overall it was a fantastic team performance with every player playing their part. These lads are working very hard and we now play Corduff in the Semi Finals. Thanks to everyone who came to support the boys on the day…
