Tyrone minors do the double in Garvaghey

Monaghan’s minor footballers and hurlers both lost out to Tyrone at the Red Hand County’s Garvaghey Training Centre on Friday night.

Having been comprehensively put to the sword by Ulster MHL Division Two winners Tyrone last month, Monaghan knew they were up against it in this Ulster Championship Shield semi-final and despite finding the net through Ruairí Forde on six minutes, they trailed by 1-13 to 1-4 at half-time. A spirited second-half showing got Monaghan back into contention, however, spurred on by goals from Ronan Curran and substitute Remy McKenna, although Tyrone held on to win by 1-18 to 3-8.

Monaghan’s Ulster Minor Football League campaign ended when they lost the shield semi-final to Tyrone by 0-17 to 0-9. Monaghan were just two points down at half-time (0-8 to 0-6), but Tyrone hit eight unanswered scores in the third quarter to pull away. Micheál Bannigan (0-4) and the returning David Garland (0-3) hit seven points between them for Monaghan, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a fourth consecutive defeat.
