Eurotech Junior Football League

Our senior footballers played Sean McDermott’s this last Sunday 26th April in the Eurotech Junior Football League and  despite a good first half performance we were beaten by 0-7 to 1-7.  This was our toughest game to date and the large crowd of supporters witnessed a hard fought encounter. It was a mixed performance from the lads who gave a solid and spirited display during the first thirty minutes and at the interval we held a 0-6 to 0-3 advantage.  Unfortunately, while we lead at the break in this highly competitive encounter, our display during the second period was inconsistent and at times we struggled to create any decent scoring opportunities. Sean McDermott’s on the other hand stepped up the pace and began to stamp their authority on the game and notched over some fine scores to secure the victory on a score-line Rockcorry 0-7 Sean McDermott’ 1-7. Think you know your sports pretty well? Do you keep up to date with current affairs? Well let’s see how much you really know because our senior footballers have decided to hold a table quiz on Friday 8th May in Fitzpatrick’s. All proceeds are in aid of team gear and equipment so your support for this fund raising event would be deeply appreciated. Each team will have four people and costs €40 per team. Refreshments will also be served on the night. So come and join in for a relaxed night of questions and general knowledge trivia with fellow colleagues and have a bit of a laugh among friends. You don’t have to be Einstein….but it wouldn’t hurt to have one at the table!!!

The next blitz for the under 10 footballers will be on Saturday 23rd May and it will also be held at Pairc Naomh Mhuire between 10am to 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg Ballybay – Spring League Finals Day

The next outing for the under 12 footballers will be against Eire Og this Saturday 2nd May when they travel to the Monaghan GAA Training Grounds located at Cloghan, Annyalla to take part in the Spring League Finals Day. Throw-in time has been confirmed for 2pm and the emphasis on the day is FUN and RESPECT and I would encourage as many parents and families to go and support the youngsters on this fun day. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the team mentors and all the players the very best of luck in their final. Please note that only five mentors are allowed free entry to Cloghan and all others (parents/supporters etc) attending must pay the €5 entry free.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg Ballybay – Under 14

Our under 14 footballers are flying the flag for the club because when they travelled to play Carrickmacross (B) in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 5 League last Saturday 25th April they emerge victorious with a comfortable win. We started brightly and set a strong early pace taking the game to their opponents and quick goals from Conleth Keenan and James O’Brien gave us a 0-0 to 2-0 lead after just five minutes on the clock. Carrickmacross weathered the storm and they gradually found their rhythm and scored 1-1 without reply but we gained the upper hand and further scores from Ryan Carroll (0-1), Conor Clerkin (0-1) Conleth Keenan (1-3) and Kevin McPhillips (0-1) guaranteed a healthy 1-1 to 3-6 advantage at the midway stage. When play resumed we continued to show the greater determination and dominated the second half and notched over some breath-taking scores from Conor Clerkin (1-0), Ryan Carroll (0-1), Araon Smyth (2-1), Alan Markey (0-1), Christopher Donnelly (0-1) and Gerry Larmer (0-1). While Carrickmacross pressed hard through-out the half our defence held strong and effective performances from Lee McCollum, Shane Greenan, Dara Dillon and Oisin Lynch ensured that they did not concede a score during the second period and as a result we secured the spoils on a final score-line Carrickmacross 1-1 Rockcorry 6-11. The previously postponed match against Inniskeen has now been fixed for Sunday 3rd May at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 12 noon. Upcoming fixtures involving the under team include Thursday 7th May when they host Carrickmacross at Pairc Naomh Mhuire at 7.30pm and Saturday 9th May when they travel to play Patrick Emmetts at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg Ballybay – Under 16

It wasn’t a good day for our under 16 footballers who endured another heavy defeat when they played Tyhollad last Thursday 23rdApril in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Under 16 Division 4 League. Tyholland were quick off the mark and were ruthless in the manner they chalked up their scores and pressed their dominance in fine fashion to run out resounding winners. Sadly Scotstown have withdrawn from the competition so they don’t have a game this week. They will be back in action on Thursday 14th May they travel to play Patrick Emmets and throw-in time is 7.15pm.

Minor Football League Division 3On Tuesday 31st March the minor team will get their first taste of action when they entertain neighbours Latton in the McElvaney Recycling Minor Football League Division 3. The game is fixed for Pairc Naomh Mhuire at 6.30pm.

Our minor team were defeated by Latton last Saturday 25th April in the Minor Football League Division 3 campaign but I have to report that the team worked very hard and the final score-line does not truly reflect the effort and superb work-rate displayed by the lads. The result may not have gone our way but the lads throughout the hour showed great heart and enjoyed plenty of possession and could quite easily have more scores registered. Instead, Latton, who were more physical, were a lot more economical and availed of every opportunity that came their way to secure a 1-11 to 6-12 victory. This was a highly exciting match played at Pairc Naomh Mhuire in glorious conditions and the opening moments were evenly contested but it did not take long before Latton surged ahead and after the first thirty minutes they held a comfortable 0-3 to 5-10 lead.  Facing a massive challenge lesser teams would have wilted and collapsed but obviously the team managers pep talk during the half time interval seemed to work wonders because the lads came out for the second half and battled hard and showed tremendous character and really held their own, against a superior Latton outfit. The game was effectively over but the lads fought back and notched up some impressive scores to outscore their opponents by 1-8 to 1-2 during the second period to leave the final score Rockcorry 1-11 Latton 6-12. They will be back in action on Tuesday 28th April when they host Emerald Sarsfields at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.30pm. On Tuesday 5th May they travel to play Castleblayney and throw-in time is 7.30pm.

Charity Cheque Presentation

Following Pat & Mary’s Brannigan’s recent Golden Wedding Anniversary the last bit of business was the formal cheque presentation to the two very worthy charities which took place last Monday 27th April at Cuan Mhuire, Ballybay. The total amount raised from the event was €2,800-00 and they first presented a cheque for €1,400-00 to the Ballybay Cancer Care Support Group. The photograph shows (left to right) Kyle Brannigan, Nicole Brannigan, Sally McEviney (Chairperson BCCSG), Pat & Mary Brannigan, Mary McMahon (Secretary BCCSG) and Josh Brannigan.  In addition, the same amount of €1,400-00 was donated towards the Cootehill Cancer Care Support Group and the photograph shows (left to right) Tony McCabe (Treasurer CCCSG), Briege Brannigan, Pat & Mary Brannigan, Conor Brannigan and Phil Clarke (Chairperson CCCSG). This impressive sum was raised at Pat & Mary’s 50thWedding Anniversary Celebration night when they decided to do something thoughtful and loving and rather than receive gifts they asked people to make a charitable donation. It was a lovely night and a memorable occasion that raised many smiles and provided plenty of entertainment. The night was a huge success and I have to say it was an honourable and wonderful gesture by Pat & Mary and their family and once again well done to you all for organising the event.

Car Wash

Last year our under 14 and 16 footballers swapped their football gear for waterproof gear as they washed cars to raise money. Such was the success of last year’s event the committee hope to announce shortly a date for this year’s event. Please let your family and friends know and when full details are known please support this car wash fundraiser and get your car down for a proper wash and make a donation towards the juvenile section of our club and as always your support of this event will be deeply appreciated.

Darkness Into Light Walk

The Pieta House Darkness into Light Walk will be held in Monaghan town on Saturday 9th May at 4.15am starting from Monaghan Harps GAA complex, Rooskey, Monaghan. Pieta House are well acknowledged for their work with suicide awareness and all clubs within County Monaghan are advised to get behind this initiative and unite to raise awareness about positive mental health and suicide.  They hope to build on the massive success of last year and it would be great if a big turnout from the club / village could join the walk in solidarity to support Pieta House. Hopefully, the weather will remain nice and dry and weather you choose to walk, run or jog the choice is yours but please remember to dress warmly and arrive early and be prepared to have a wonderful morning.
