It was a fine weekend for Monaghan’s county teams, with all three sides in action picking up full points.
The county’s minor hurlers started things off on Saturday with a three-point win over Louth in Clones, helped by goals from Ciarán Cassidy, Nathan O’Donoghue and Mark Murphy, while the senior hurlers followed that up on Sunday by defeating the same county at Dowdallshill, Dundalk. Ronan Meegan continued his prolific form with nine points, while Stephen Lambe hit 2-3, as Monaghan maintained their unbeaten start to the Allianz National Hurling League Division 3A.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Monaghan returned to winning ways in the Allianz National Football League Division Two in a low-scoring battle away to Donegal, where late points by Rory Beggan and Fintan Kelly proved decisive. The Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Division 1A started with a draw between Latton and Scotstown on Saturday, before Truagh defeated Magheracloone on Sunday. The game between Cremartin and Clontibret was postponed. There were opening-round wins for Monaghan Harps and Ballybay at the expense of Aughnamullen and Castleblayney respectively in Division 1B, while Tyholland and Emyvale played out a draw. Donaghmoyne and Doohamlet beat Seán McDermotts and Rockcorry in Division 2A, while in Division 2B, Corduff saw off Inniskeen and Blackhill drew with Carrickmacross. Clones had a high-scoring win away to Toome in Division Three.
St. Patrick’s started the McElvaney Recycling Minor Football League Division One with a comfortable win over Truagh on Saturday, while Seán McDermotts got the better of neighbours Scotstown on Sunday.
