Minor Football League! The Emmets minor team had the honour of playing the first game of the year in Emmet Park on Tuesday evening against Magheracloone in the first round of the league. The unusual time meant that a small crowd witnessed the game on a cold evening. The first half was the period that lost this encounter for the home side when Emmets went in trailing by 3.02 to 0.02 at the break; with Patrick Mitchell and Jack Ogle being the only Emmets marksmen: In the first ten minutes of the second half the Mitchel’s missed three scorable points while Jack Ogle pointed a free-kick to close the gap. A strong run from midfield yielded a point from play for Magheracloone but Jack Ogle once again pointed; this time from play. Magheracloone pointed from play after missing a goal chance; then Jack Ogle got his fourth and fifth points of the game both from a free-kicks. Ronan Curran hit the point of the match into the town end in a mini revival from the Emmets and the same player could have had another but shot wide. The gamed more or less ended when Magheracloone counter attacked and a loose ball was tapped over the line for the Mitchell’s fourth goal. Substitute Cathal McEnaney pulled a point back with a sweet left footer that skimmed the bar and Jack Ogle finished the scoring with another point for a free kick; to leave the full time score; Carrickmacross 0.09 Magheracloone 4.04. Darren Hughes was outstanding in goals; Martin O’Rourke tackled well in defence; the half back line were under constantly under pressure from midfield; in the centre area the Emmets got more possession in the second half; Jack Ogle did most of the scoring and he was well supported by Karl McMenamin and Ronan Curran. Vote of Sympathy! The Emmets club sends our condolences to the McEnaney family Tom, Pat, Michael, Frank, Seamus, Margaret, Anne, Nora and Bernie on the death of their much loved mother Maureen who went to her eternal reward this week. We also include in our sympathy her grandsons Gary and Conor both of whom who play their football with the Emmets and feature strongly with the Intermediate team. We also want to commiserate with her brother Peter Connolly who was one of the influential committee members when Emmet Park was being developed and a great Emmet man in his time at the helm. The McEnaney “footballing” family needs no introduction to GAA followers as they have contributed greatly to the Association in many sectors over the years and undoubtedly their mother Maureen was their greatest supporter and enthusiast. To those of us who knewMaureen we will remember her warm-heartedness and smile; she was blessed with a pleasant demure and when in her company you shared those special characteristics which made you feel welcome and appreciated no matter where you met her and if the occasion happened to be in her home then the kettle was on the hob as soon as you came through the door!“Suaimhneas síoraí do d’anam” The Emmets club forward our sympathy to Malachy and Aisling Mitchell on the death of Malachy’s mother Bridie who also departed this life last week in Kilberry; county Meath. Her grandson Patrick is currently one of the leading players with the Emmet Minor football team. “Suaimhneas síoraí do d’anam”
