Reserves: The season began on a winning note for the Reserve team claiming all the points away to Castleblayney. Against the wind in the first half Ballybay played some wonderful free flowing football in the early exchanges opening up an early lead with Danny Gorman hitting a number of difficult frees, a wonder strike from Fergal Smyth’s right multi coloured boots and Barry Macklin getting the goal, which would prove to be a vital, were just some of the scorers. However the team failed to push on from the impressive start and Blayney got to grips with the game and pushed the Ballybay defence to the limit forcing Brian McCabe into a number of impressive saves & hitting the post on a number of occasions including once from the penalty spot. Scores were hard to come across with the wind in the second half but good work by Brent Wylie, James Kerr, Cillian McAviney, Fergal Smyth, Mark McArdle, James Garraghan, & Paul Stuart ensured that Ballybay held out for a two point winning margin. Full time score 1-10 to 1-8. The team was: Brian McCabe, Mark McArdle, James Garraghan, Paul Stuart, James Allister, Evan Rutledge, Fergal Smyth, Brent Wylie, CillianMcAviney, James Kerr, Pauric Kerr, Aaron Toner, Barry Macklin, Danny Gorman, Kelvin McEntee, Colin Malone, Conor Hand & Niall Duffy. This weekend sees the first home game of the season when the Reserves take on Aughnamullan on Saturday evening at 4.30pm.
Juveniles: The St Pats minor team also got their season of to a winning start with a great victory over Traugh down in Traugh, never an easy place to go and come away with the victory. Full time score 2-15 to 1-7. St Pats also have their first home game of the year against Sean McDermotts this Saturday afternoon at 2.30pm in Drumhowan. The U14’s begin their season with a home game against Eire Og this Saturday afternoon in Pearse Park at 2pm. Thanks to Sean Colon Solicitors who sponsored a lovely set of jerseys for the St Pats minor for the coming season. Your contribution is very mush appreciated. Also the juvenile committee would like to thank anyone who contributed to their recent “Flag Day”. As always the event was well supported with a significant amount raised that will help keep the club functional for the majority of the season. Also a special word of thanks to those who gave up their time for the club & stood at the various collection points around the town. Thanks to all again.
Best of luck to Eoin McKearney who lines out for Our Lady’s Castleblayney in this year’s all Monaghan affair MacLarnon final on St Patricks Day.
