Monaghan started their Allianz National Football League Division One campaign on a positive note with a 1-13 to 0-9 win over Tyrone in Omagh last Saturday. That was followed by a 1-19 to 1-11 victory for the county’s Under-21 footballers in their Shamrock Cup opener against Louth in Inniskeen on Sunday, with Conor McCarthy and Alan McCahey contributing seven points each and Fergal McGeough getting 1-1. There was no luck for Monaghan’s senior ladies, who fell to a NFL Division One first-round defeat away to Dublin, or for St. Macartan’s College, who lost their Ulster Colleges MacRory Cup play-off against St. Patrick’s, Maghera. Largy College, Clones fared better in their Ulster Post-Primary Schools U-18 Championship tie on Tuesday, when they defeated Bundoran.
