Monaghan’s Under-21 footballers exited the Hastings tournament with a heavy defeat against Kerry on Saturday (see report). 24 hours later, Scotstown’s Under-21s lost by an almost identical score to Glen Watty Grahams in the Ulster Club Championship in Creggan. Conor McCarthy helped keep Scotstown in contention for spells, but they had Tommy Moyna sent off and the Maghera side turned it on in the second half, scoring three goals to pull away.
Castleblayney’s bid to become the first Monaghan club to qualify for an All-Ireland hurling final ended in disappointment on Sunday when they were well beaten by British champions Fullen Gaels. Blayney were first off the mark through Hugh Byrne, but he had a penalty saved and was later sent off, along with team-mates Bernard Connor and Patrick Finnegan. Fullen Gaels led by 0-9 to 0-3 at half-time and they added goals from Vincent Morrissey and Patrick Duggan, either side of a consolation score for Blayney by Steven Forde.
