Monaghan Coaching and Games organised a 5th and 6th Class Team Skills Competition. All schools in the county were invited to take part in the competition. In total 14 schools took part. This is the first time that the skills competition was run as a team competition instead of an individual competition. This worked well with all the schools seeming to enjoy the day.
Each team had four members who had to complete the skills circuit four times in a row. The competition itself covered all the main skills of Gaelic Football, the pick up, solo, kick pass, hand pass and shooting. Each time a team completed a certain skill they where awarded a total of 10 points. There was 200 points in total available. All teams were timed so at the end of the competition if there was a tie, the team who completed the course the quickest won.
The standard of the competition was very high with each school who completed the test receiving a minimum of 100 points. In the end there could only be one winner. Lisdoonan National School came out on top with an excellent display thanks to the skills of their team members Ciaran Finnegan, Diarmuid Marron, Liam McDonald and Shane Irwin. Drumgossat National School came home in second position. Their team members were Oran McMahon, Daniel McCahey-Byrne, Oisin Byrne and Rory McMahon. Corracrin National School finished up in third place after finishing on the same number of points with Drumgossat they missed out on second place after having a slower time than their counter parts. The Corracrin team members were Darragh Sherry, Ben Sherry, Kelvin Hackett and Michael Hamill.
The first place prize was 15 Smart Touch Footballs with second and third place receiving 5 Smart Touch Footballs.
We would just like to thank all the schools for taking part and all the parents/ teachers/ mentors for taking the children to the competition. Hopefully this is something we can build on going forward.
