Clones Notes

By Mary McEneaney Wed 24th Sep

Seniors: Clones put their recent championship disappointment behind them last Saturday by recording a vital win over Sean’s in Threemilehouse. This was a gritty display from Clones with the defence having to be on their toes throughout to keep Sean’s strong attacking unit at bay.  Clones started brightly with an expertly taken goal from Sarto Quigley the highlight of the first half. A four point cushion at half time was maintained until the very last kick of the game when a high, speculative ball found its way to the Clones net and left only a point between the teams at the full time whistle. Final score, Sean’s 2-09 Clones 1-13.  A crucial two points for Clones in the race for a play off place and we host another of our rivals for the top 4 this weekend. Carrickmacross come to St. Tiarnach’s Park on Sunday next for a 12:30pm throw in. All support appreciated at this critical stage of the season as the team and management battle to earn a place in the league semi final. We have three league games remaining after next weekend: Rockcorry at home and Emyvale and Corduff away. The league is extremely close and competitive and every match promises to be keenly contested.

Under 11’s: On Saturday last 20th September we travelled to Emyvale to take part in the annual B.C. blitz. This is a very well organised competition with teams from Monaghan , Fermanagh, Tyrone and Armagh taking part . In the group stages we had games against our neighbours Killeevan, Inniskeen and Fintona. We finished our group games in joint first position and progressed to the quarter finals and played our Fermanagh neighbours Roslea. Unfortunately we were defeated in the semi final by our hosts Emyvale. This is a competition where a full squad is needed the games come thick and fast. Well done to all the children who took part. A big thank you to Declan Mc Quaid who made the effort to travel, Saturday was a very busy day for him as he had an important game for the senior team later in the afternoon, the boys certainly appreciated it. It was also great that so many parents came along to support the team. Finally thanks to Emyvale for the invitation and hopefully we will be back again next year.
