Seniors: Intermediate Football Championship: It’s hard to know what to say about last Saturday’s Championship encounter against Inniskeen. It shows the unpredictability of sport that a team we beat convincingly on their own pitch last Sunday could turn around and beat us well six days later. We didn’t help ourselves by conceding a soft goal in the first half which boosted Inniskeen’s confidence. Some sloppy passing and wayward shooting also contributed to our downfall. Clones being issued with two red cards following an incident involving players from both teams really left us with a mountain to climb midway through the second half. To their credit though the 13 lads remaining battled to the finish and finished the stronger team despite the numerical imbalance. Even in defeat there are always positives to be taken and this Clones squad will dust themselves down and come back strongly. We are still in the Championship and sit in a healthy position in the league with a play-off position certainly within our reach. We must put this game behind us very quickly as we encounter Corduff in Scotstown this Saturday at 5:30pm. We would encourage all our supporters to turn up again and give the lads your support as a win on Saturday would earn us a place in the Championship semi-final
U16’s the best of luck to our U16’s play Patrick Emmett’s (Currin/Aghabog amalgamation) in the championship final on Saturday. This game is in Smithborough at 12pm and the lads would really appreciate the support. Cluain Eois ABU.
U14’s played Toome in the Div4 shield final on Saturday; despite playing very well for large parts of this game we were unable to overcome a strong Toome team. The players will learn a lot from this and have enjoyed their football all year. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who came out last Saturday.
The Under 14 Team played their final game of the season in the Shield Final of Division 4 in Cremartins Shamrock Park on Saturday against Toome.
Expectations were high having beaten Toome twice in recent league games. Alas it was not to be on the day and Toome finished up winners 4.10 to 3.7 in what turned out to be an enthralling physical encounter.
The team had been hampered by injuries beforehand to key players and a bout of vomiting bug laid which laid low others can be proud of their exploits & determination to give a good account of themselves. Rian Kierans, Kevin Coogan , Simon O’Connell, Alan Curley & Conal Smyth all of whom move up to Under 16 level next year typified this fighting spirit and chased game until final whistle.
Under 8/10’s: Training continues for our youngest members every Wednesday evening.
Faraway in the USA: For the next few months we are going to try and include other sports that have people with a Clones connection. Don’t be afraid to give us ideas as we might not know a certain Clone or their connection to us. This week and hopefully a lot more we are looking at Patrick Murray. Who?? Aidan Murray’s son? Who? He is a grandson of Johnnie and Maisie Murray RIP Newtownbutler Road. He is also the nephew of Ciaran and Brendan Murray former Club and County stars. Being a Murray height was generally not an issue, but if you were thinking American Football, well Patrick was a tad on the Smaller side. So Patrick decided that he would go the route of place kicker. Sunday was his debut on the big stage as Kicker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the American NFL. Although they were beaten Patrick stepped up to kick two extra points for touchdowns scored in the fourth quarter. A 100% record, well done Patrick. Next up is the St Louis Rams next Sunday night.
