McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

Our senior team travelled to St. Mary’s Park, Scotstown, last Sunday 17th August, to play Clones in the McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship and when the final whistle sounded you could almost hear the theme tune from the famous Steve McQueen film “The Great Escape” echoing around the grounds because we got out of jail with a late free-kick from Mark Daly, on the 30th minute, to earn ourselves a replay. It was a tight affair in the first half and was delicately poised as both teams exchanged some nice scores and at the interval both teams had 0-4 apiece. When play resumed we got off to a bad start as Clones started the brighter and after ten minutes they enjoyed a five point lead, leading 0-5 to 1-7.  When we eventually settled we started to up the ante and notched over some good scores to close the gap to just two points with the scoreboard showing 0-8 to 1-8 with ten minutes remaining on the clock. It was a tense and tight affair during the closing stages and the lads showed remarkable character, heart and determination to battle back and with virtually the last kick of regulation time we levelled proceedings 0-12 to 1-9 to keep our hopes alive of progressing to the next round of the competition. Speedy Recovery

The club extends their best wishes and a speedy recovery to Noel Carroll who sustained a knee injury and also Lorcan Smyth who picked up a groin strain while playing the championship game last Sunday and we hope to see you both back wearing the green jersey as soon as possible.

Golf Classic 2014

Get your clubs and swing ready because this Saturday 23rd August all roads lead to the scenic setting of Clones Golf Club for our annual fund raising golf classic event which has kindly been sponsored by Aidan & Marie Murray of Mullinahinch House Private Nursing Home and we sincerely thank them for their generosity, kindness and support. The golf classic is an important fund raiser for the club as well as being a great social occasion and the day will begin at 8.00am with the first team teeing off followed by nineteen holes of challenging golf. If you are a golfer, we’d love to see you there and hopefully at this stage you have your foursomes together. To guarantee your preferred tee time please contact Jimmy McGeough 087-9457279, Ollie McQuillan 087-2100800 or Michael Carroll 086-1041165. If you have not already committed to play there is still plenty of time to sign up so grab three friends and don’t miss your chance to be part of this great event. For the non-regular golfers I would recommend to bring plenty of goal balls! On behalf of the club I want to thank all the teams and tee sponsors for supporting our golf classic and we look forward to a wonderful day of good golf, good fun and I hope the weather and playing conditions are kind to you all. Best of luck to all golfers and keep on swinging!!!

Golf Classic Presentations

The presentation of prizes will take place in Fitzpatrick’s later on Saturday night and refreshments on the night so come out, relax and have some fun! Along with the fabulous prizes on offer there will also be some novelty spot prizes for the longest drive, nearest the pin, the most putts and off course the golfer who lost the most golf balls throughout the day.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 League

Our under 12 footballers have qualified for the semi-final of the Division 2B Shield Competition against Corduff. Unfortunately, the fixture has been fixed for Thursday 21st August at 7pm which sadly clashes with the under 16 semi-final. It is very disappointing that the games have been schedule for the same date but I would encourage all parents, and members to show your support and travel to the match and cheer on all the children. Good luck boys and girls.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 League

Our under 14 footballers travelled to play Tyholland, on Saturday 16th August, in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg division 4 league campaign and on the day a better balanced Tyholland outfit proved too strong and secured a comfortable victory. The first quarter was closely contested as both sides displayed some promising skill and passion but found it difficult to register scores and after the first fifteen minutes the scoreboard showed Tyholland 0-2 to Rockcorry 0-1. The second quarter really belonged to the home side as they started and finished well producing a superb performance and netted three goals and four points to lead by 3-6 to 0-3 at the midway stage. While we fought back admirably in the third quarter and enjoyed the better of the opening minutes we could not find the target and hit some bad wides. Tyholland, on the other hand, soon found their groove, and their scoring touch, and notched up an impressive 3-2 to stretch their advantage to 6-8 to 1-5. In fairness, the lads never gave up and came out for the last quarter with all guns blazing and were unlucky not to score a couple more goals but towards the end of the match Tyholland started to regain control and scored two late goals to seal the victory on a score-line Tyholland 8-8 Rockcorry 2-8. Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 League

The under 16 footballers have secured a semi-final spot in the Division 4 league campaign and will play Cremartin (away) on Thursday 21st August at 7pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 Championship

They have been pitted against neighbours Latton in the semi-final which will take place on Thursday 28th August and will certainly prove to be an amazing clash.

Under 10 Go Games Blitz

A couple of weeks ago they were in the stands or up on the hill supporting and cheering on the Monaghan senior team in the Ulster Final but earlier today, Saturday 16th August, the under 10 footballers got the chance to run down the tunnel and out onto St. Tiarnach’s Park, Clones to take part in another fun and exciting Go Games Blitz campaign. The kids got the opportunity to showcase their footballing talents & skills on the day, and I have to say that the standard of football on offer is rising considerably at every blitz and just goes to show the fantastic work that is being carried, out at the grassroots levels, by dedicated coaches and mentors across the county.  There were not as many people there as the Ulster Final but the kids didn’t care because they all put on a tremendous show for their parents, family and other spectators who turned up and I would like to sincerely thank them for getting up early on a Saturday morning to help with the transportation. The next blitz will be a double blitz (Under 8 & 10’s) and will take place on Saturday 6th September at Latton.
