Rockcorry Notes

By Majella Boyd Wed 6th Aug

Come on the Farney!

You will have to forgive me, but jaysus, what an amazing game last Saturday evening between Monaghan v Kildare, it really was an epic battle and I would like to extend huge congratulations to all the warriors who worked extremely hard all over the field and certainly ran themselves into the ground and left every ounce of energy on the playing field…well done lads. They can take a lot of positives out of their performance and will have to do it all over again this Saturday 9th August when they take on the current All-Ireland Champions Dublin in a mouth-watering encounter. Get ready to show your support and wear your county colours with pride and joy and cheer on the Monaghan team to another great victory. On behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our best wishes to all the players and the back room management team. Good luck lads, do yourselves proud and leave everything out on the field. Come on MONAGHAN.

Monaghan Electrical League

The senior team will be back in action this Sunday 10th August when they play Sean McDermott’s in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League. The game is fixed for Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 2.00pm.

Rock Grand Prix…A Mowmentous Day!

Wow, what an amazing day of fun and excitement! I imagine many of you are content to use your everyday lawnmower to just cut grass but have you ever pretended you were a race car driver rallying around the front lawn? It’s okay to admit that you have, you are not alone, I have often imagined that I’m Michael Schumacher racing around the lawn! We weren’t just content with cutting grass…we wanted to provide you with something far more gripping & thrilling and to get the adrenalin going we added the thrill of the chase. That’s right for the past couple of weeks competitors have been preparing their machines and, I understand, in one or two cases they were souped up for this spectacular and ‘Mowmentous’ event which took place last Monday 4th August. We promised you entertainment, we promised you some crazy and wacky racing and boy we did not fail to deliver because it was simply incredible and a massive well done to all the competitors who stepped forward and took part in the event. After three competitive heats Cormac Harte, Aaron Smyth, Colin Quinn, Padraig Reilly, Cathal Sheridan & Kieran Fitzpatrick progressed to the final which basically consisted of a carefully constructed obstacle course plus a small plot of grass to cut and the person to complete the task in the quickest time was the ultimate Ride-On Lawnmower Champion. At this stage, the crowd was screaming, the machines were roaring and the drivers were really buzzing and the wheels were skimming along the top of the ground. However, the larger and probably deemed the hot favourite found the going tough through the course and lost a significant amount of time manoeuvring through the cones while the smaller machines negotiated the course more quickly, carefully and skilfully and in the end with a margin of only twenty-one seconds Colin “The Lightning” Quinn claimed the prestigious title and the honour of becoming the first ever Ride-on Lawnmower Champion and congratulations to him on a wonderful achievement.  When I caught up Colin after the presentation he was still very emotional and touched with his victory and added “this is one of the biggest achievements in my life and I want to thank all my fans and supporters for believing in me. I was certainly punching above my weight but I knew I could compete against the souped-up modified machines…this sport is about speed obviously but more importantly it’s about cutting grass and that’s what I do best.”

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 League

The next game for the under 14 footballers is on Saturday 16th August when they travel to play Tyholland at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 League

Our under 16 footballers were in action last Thursday 31st July when they played Latton in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg league campaign. This was a local derby clash and it certainly created a lot of interest with the supporters because the match was played in front of a decent & enthusiastic crowd at Pairc Naomh Mhuire. The match was highly enjoyable, very entertaining and a thrill-a-minute encounter and after a gallant display by the lads they sadly finished second best to their neighbours. Despite producing a spirited performance, particularly during the second half, Latton ultimately edged in front at a vital time to seal the victory on a final-score-line Rockcorry 7-12 Latton 6-17.  Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way but everybody on the team contributed to a great team effort and indeed, were it not for some first half profligacy, we could conceivably had created a big shock by collecting the spoils on offer as a number of potential scores drifted wide. As it happened, it was Latton’s ability to convert their chances and two late scores propelled them to a narrow victory. This performance should give our lads and the team management a source of encouragement and give them an extra incentive for their next game.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 Championship

The under 16 team play Emerald Sarsfields on Thursday 7th August in the quarter final of the championship competition. The game is fixed for Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.30pm. Good luck lads.
