Sean Mc Dermotts Notes

An  Appreciation – Pat O’Reilly

The news of Pat O’ Reilly’s passing on 4th July 2014 was received with shock and an unbelievable sense of loss in our club,  parish  communities and particularly  by his team mates of the late 60’s.  Amongst these men there is a tremendous bond of friendship and camaraderie and his loss was very clear. Pat was the goalkeeper on that very successful squad. Although  not the tallest, his incredible reflexes and feline like agility more than compensated for any perceived lack of inches.  Sean’s supporter can recall with pleasure and pride and indeed team mates recollect with relief when the black jersey clad Pat, complete with  peaky cap firmly affixed, was hurtling through the air to rescue his team with another unstoppable shot .  Although , always a keen competitor, Pat’s friendly temperament and good humoured personality epitomised and reflected how he enjoyed sport. Be it playing Gaelic football, golf, or bowls, a philosophy not always shared by teammates!!!.

It wasn’t only on the playing field that Pat made a major contribution to the Seans. At the formation of the club in 1961 he was elected as a joint treasurer on the inaugural committee, a position he held for a number of years.

Pat’s involvement in so many voluntary and charitable organisations within our parish exemplified his love and caring for those in his native community. His association with CLG Sean Mac Diarmada was no different .Continuously taking a passionate interest in the clubs fortunes and emerging talent. That was a measure of Pat.  Nothing gave him more pleasure than to see players of any age don the Saffron and White and give it their best.  In recent years despite failing health he was still a regular at Sean’s games with his good humour, and  smiling as always.

To his wife Mary, Brother Pete and family circle we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
