Good Luck Monaghan

This weekend is the August Bank Holiday and I believe the weather is supposed to be perfect so you really have no excuses! Make

sure you get a ticket and get yourself to Croke Park this Saturday 2nd August because Monaghan take on Kildare in the back-door qualifiers. This will be another great opportunity to wear the Monaghan jersey so get behind the team once again and show your support for the lads. On behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our best wishes to all the players and the back room management team. Good luck lads, do yourselves proud and leave everything out on the field. Come on MONAGHAN.

Rock Grand Prix

On your mark, get ready, and get set for one of the wackiest races you will ever see, in your life, because this Bank Holiday Monday 4th August, the Rock Grand Prix will be taking place. Move over Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso and make way for some other crazy, courageous and thrill-seeking drivers who will be using their everyday ride-on lawnmower in the name of sport. That’s right folks, the race will involve ride-on lawnmowers and it’s expected that the racers will be divided into various heats or categories based on performance, time trails and amount of money raised. The starting grid will be at the local Primary School located down the Ballybay road and the chequered flag will await the fastest driver at the finishing line down at Pairc Naomh Mhuire. The racers will be competing not for prize money, but simply the prestige and honour of holding the coveted title of the first ever Ride-on Lawnmower Champion! It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity for the people of the village and surrounding areas see something new and exciting and definitely very strange!  So please come along and have a blast cheering on friends and family and why not hang around afterwards and feast on a lovely sizzling barbeque while the kids enjoy a disco and other activities.

Golf Classic 2014

Our upcoming golf classic takes place on Saturday 23rd August so please spread the word to all your golfing buddies. This year’s event will once again be held at the prestigious Clones Golf Course and we are delighted to have Mullinahinch Private Nursing Home on board as our Main Sponsor. The cost to enter a team is €120.00 and to book your place please contact our chairman Jimmy McGeough 087-9457279 or Ollie McQuillan 087-2100800 and a member of the organising committee will be in contact with you to discuss a convenient time for you to play. There are also exciting opportunities for businesses, families and individuals to advertise by sponsoring a tee or a green for a reasonable €50. This will be another great opportunity for you to showcase your golfing talents so make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd August and we look forward to seeing you at the first Tee. If you are unable to play golf but would still like to make a contribution perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring a prize for a raffle. If so please get in touch because we would be delighted to talk to you.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 League

Our under 14 footballers travelled to St. Victor’s Park last Saturday 26th July to play Toome in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Under 14 League Division 4. We started brightly and set a strong early pace taking the game to their opponents and quick goals from Ryan Carroll and Ryan Lynch gave us a 0-2 to 2-0 lead midway through the first period. Toome weathered the storm and they gradually found their rhythm and scored three points without reply and two goals followed in quick succession to give them a 2-6 to 2-1 lead after the first fifteen minutes. When play resumed we showed greater determination and dominated the second quarter and notched over some breath-taking scores from Kyle Brannigan (0-1), Aaron Smyth (0-1), Pauric O’Brien (1-0) and Caolan McPhillips (0-1) to leave only a single score separating the sides with the scoreboard showing Toome 2-8 (14) Rockorry 3-4 (13). The game continued at a frantic pace with both teams exchanging some lovely scores however Toome stretched their advantage and enjoyed a four point cushion going into the final quarter, leading 4-10 to 4-6. The lads showed unbelievable character and while they gave it their best the final quarter belonged to Toome as they controlled possession and fired home some nice scores to secure the victory on a final score-line Toome 8-15 Rockcorry 6-8. Their next game is on Saturday 16th August when they travel to play Tyholland at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 League

The under 16 team will play their last game in the league campaign on Thursday 31st July when they play host to neighbours Latton and throw-in time is 7.30pm.

Under 10 Go Games Blitz

Our under 10 footballers travelled to Oram last Saturday 26th July to take part in a Go Games Blitz competition and there was certainly plenty of passion as all the kids displayed enthusiasm and loads of energy. All teams acquitted themselves exceptionally well and the matches were extremely entertaining and the excitement displayed by all the players was very visible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all players and family who travelled on the day and a massive well done to our mentors, Paul McCormick, Brian Carroll and Fintan Larmer for taking the time to nurture the future stars of the club. The next Go Games Blitz will for the under 8 players and will take place on Saturday 9th August in Clones. The under 10 footballers will return to action on Saturday 23rd August.

Ball Stop Nets Erected

One of my favourite films of the eighties was Ghostbusters and the theme song to the film had a memorable line that went…”if there’s something strange in the neighbourhood who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!” In a similar way, if there’s something that needs to be done at Pairc Naomh Mhuire, getting the job done right means having the right man with the right tools, so who you gonna call? Well ninty-nine times out of a hundred you would call Anthony Clerkin and when the club needed new ball stop nets erected Anthony was once again on hand to take charge and along with our chairman Jimmy McGeough the pair got the new nets erected last Saturday. A job well-done lads.

Happy Birthday

I would like to extend our best wishes to Keelan Clerkin who celebrated his 21st birthday last weekend with family and friends. It was by all accounts a late night but also a great night and as they say what goes on tour stays on tour! Happy birthday Keelan and we hope you had a wonderful day and we wish you many, many more to come.

New Arrival

On behalf of the club I would like to extend our congratulations and best wishes to club great Ciaran O’Hart and his wife Julie on the recent birth of their baby boy Tadgh Kieran O’Hart.

Deepest Sympathy

On behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Liz Carroll and members of the Bates family on the passing of Bridie Bates, (Latton). May her gentle soul rest in peace.
