Rockcorry Notes

Speedy Recovery

Over the last couple of months our club first aid lady, Tina Rooney, has been flat out looking after our injured players but over the weekend she sustained a leg injury (don’t ask!!!) and is currently hobbling about on crutches. The funny thing is the only thing that she is worried about is will she be able to attend the Ulster Final on Sunday! I imagine, no matter whether it rains, hail or shine this Sunday she will be in full voice shouting and cheering on the lads. All the best Tina we hope you make a speedy recovery and we hope to see back in action as soon as possible.

Ulster Final

This Sunday is a great opportunity for you all to show off your county colours with pride and support the County Senior team when they compete in the Ulster Final against Donegal. It all takes place at St. Tiernach’s Park, Clones and on behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our best wishes to the players and the backroom team and urge all our members to go along and cheer on the lads and be that extra man! Good luck lads, do yourselves proud. Come on MONAGHAN.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

I read an interesting article recently that singing has been proven to relieve physical, mental and emotional pain and that it also helps to lower blood pressure and boost the immune system.  After watching our senior team’s play Tyholland last Friday 11th July in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league I think I’m going to start singing lessons! Pardon the cliché but if there was ever a game of two halves then this was it because we started brightly and convincingly controlled the opening half with our defence remaining resolute and strong against some lively opponents and our midfielders & forwards played some lovely attacking football with some intricate passing moves, which was a delight to watch, and after thirty minutes of some highly entertaining football we held a five point advantage, leading 1-6 to 0-4 at the break.  However, the tables turned in the second half because, all the positive work done during the first half was outshone by Tyholland’s blistering and incredible performance during the second half as they showed more determination and a lot more hunger and quickly overturned the five point deficit and secured the victory on a score-line Rockcorry 1-8 to Tyholland 0-14. A full match report can be viewed on our official website www.rockcorrygaa.ie

Golden Jubilee Celebration Night

Fifty years ago Fr. Jerry White was ordained to the priesthood and to commemorate and celebrate his Golden Jubilee a special Thanksgiving Mass will take place in St. Mary’s Corravacan on Friday 18th July at 8.00pm. Mass will be followed by a presentation and refreshments in St. Mary’s Hall, Rockcorry. This is a very special and historic day for Fr. Jerry White and we are delighted that the people of the Rockcorry Parish can be part of it. Since arriving in the Parish his vision and leadership has certainly challenged people within the community to actively participate in the works of the Parish. His kindness as a priest is obvious and he is always upbeat, welcoming and pleasant and we are truly blessed to have someone of his calibre and spiritual guide to shepherd us during our journey. The organising committee invite family, friends and parishioners to join us on Friday 18th July to mark and celebrate this wonderful occasion and we hope all families within the parish will support and make a voluntary contribution at the door. Finally, on behalf of the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations and extend my best wishes to Fr. Jerry White on his 50th Anniversary and as you move onward may the Lord continually bless you and guide you as you bring the love of God to those in your path.

Guess the Score Competition

Monaghan will play Donegal in this year’s Ulster Senior Football Championship final on Sunday 20th July and our juvenile committee have decided to run a “Guess the Score” competition. This is your opportunity to test your knowledge and predict the score of the game. All proceeds will go towards costs associated with running all our juvenile teams and your support would be deeply appreciated. All underage players are reminded to make a big effort to fill your Guess the Score cards and if you have not already received one please talk to your team coach. Thank you for your support.

Rock Grand Prix

FIVE… petrol & oil levels – check, FOUR…parking brake – check, THREE…cutting blades raised – check, TWO…throttle to choke – check, ONE…key in ignition – check….Thunderbirds are GO (showing my age!), or to use a more recent quote from one of my favourite films, Toy Story,…”To infinity….and beyond”. To date our upcoming Grand Prix has received a great reaction from the general public and is certainly picking up speed as we approach the big date on Saturday 26th July. The race will involve ride-on lawnmowers and it’s expected that the racers will be divided into various heats or categories based on performance, time trails and amount of money raised. The racers will be competing not for prize money, but simply the prestige and honour of holding the coveted title of the first ever Ride-on Lawnmower Champion! Speaking to a number of wives and partners recently I understand that their other halves have been spending a lot of time mowing their own lawns and even their neighbours as they cram in that extra bit of practice ready for the big event…which got me thinking, I haven’t seen a daisy or a dandelion in ages! This will be the first ever ride-on lawnmower race to take place in the village and we want to make it a special event. It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity for the people of the village and surrounding areas to come out and see something new and exciting and definitely very strange!  So please come along and have a blast cheering on friends and family and why not hang around afterwards and feast a lovely sizzling barbeque while the kids enjoy a disco and other activities.

Golf Classic 2014

Following the success of our Golf Classic in 2013 I am pleased to announce that plans are well underway for this year’s event which will be held at the prestigious Clones Golf Course on Saturday 23rd August. Once again we are delighted to have Mullinahinch Private Nursing Home on board as our Main Sponsor and on behalf of the club I would like to sincerely thank them for their continued support and we deeply appreciate their backing of this fund raising event. This will be another great opportunity for you to showcase your golfing talents so make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd August and we look forward to seeing you at the first Tee.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 Summer League

The next outing for the under 12 footballers will be this Saturday 19th July when they travel to play Eire Og at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 League

Our under 14 footballers made the short journey to Pairc Emmett last Saturday 12th July to play Aghabog in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Under 14 league campaign. Regardless of what the final score-line suggests this was a truly epic battle from beginning to end as both sides served up a thrilling and breath-taking encounter that will live long in the memory of all who saw it. The game had a lively start with Aghabog storming into an early lead but we rallied and played some nice attacking football and by the end of the first period we held a slight advantage leading 2-1 (7) to 1-6 (9). The thrills and spills of this highly absorbing contest continued at a frantic pace during the second quarter with both teams displaying some lovely free-flowing football and we maintained a slight advantage leading by three points Aghabog 4-1 (13) to Rockcorry 2-10 (16). The game ebbed & flowed during the third period as play moved from end to end and was certainly a delight to watch as all players worked tirelessly to create opportunities and when the whistle sounded to single the end of the third period it was Aghabog’s turn to hold a slender advantage, leading by 7-4 (25) to 4-12 (24). With only a single point between the sides the game was in the proverbial melting pot and could have gone either way. However, during a five minute purple patch, Aghabog attacked with great fervour that yielded an impressive 4-5 to open up unassailable eighteen point gap. To the lads credit, they never threw in the towel and during the closing stages they renewed their attack and finished strongly scoring 2-3 but we just couldn’t close the gap enough and as time ran out Aghabog secured the victory on a final score-line Aghabog 11-10 Rockcorry 6-15. A selection of action photographs can be viewed on our official website www.rockcorrygaa.ie or visit our Facebook page. Their next game is on Saturday 26th July when they travel to play Toome at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 League

Our under 16 footballers travelled to Currin last Monday evening, 14th July, to play Clones in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg league campaign but sadly Clones were unable to field a team, but they didn’t waste the journey, and played a challenge game instead. Their next game is on Thursday 17th July when they travel to play Cremartin and the match has a throw-in time of 7.30pm.

Under 10’s Go Games Blitz

You may have seen or heard a current advertisement for the Croke Park Classic which is promoting an American Football match between two rival Universities and the main punch line goes “where Passion and Power collide”. In a similar fashion, when our under 10 footballers travelled to Cloghan earlier today, Saturday 12th July, to take part in a Go Games Blitz competition there was certainly plenty of passion and power and even buckets loads of enthusiasm and energy to go with it! There was a great turnout with twenty kids taking part and they all acquitted themselves exceptionally well. The matches were extremely entertaining and the excitement displayed by both players and parents was very visible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all players and family who travelled on the day and a massive well done to our mentors for taking the time to nurture the future stars of the club.

Under 8’s & 10’s Double Go Games Blitz

This Friday 18th July the under 8’s and 10’s footballers will get another chance to showcase their skills when they travel to Aughnamullen to take part in another exciting Go Games Blitz campaign between 7.00pm to 9.00pm.
