The Late Packie McQuaid

The death of Packie McQuaid has severed the last remaining link with the group of young men who helped re-establish our club nearly seventy years ago, and went on to bring such honour and success to it over the following decade and a half. Packie started his football career outfield, but quickly made the full-back position his own, and he ruled the Clontibret square for the next fifteen years or so. He captained the first senior championship winning team in 1949, and had the honour of being the first man to lift the newly-presented American Cup. He wore the Monaghan number 2 shirt with distinction for many years, and his successes included the Dr. Lagan Cup in 1950, the Dr. McKenna Cup in 1952, and was one of seven Clontibret men narrowly beaten by Cavan in the 1952 Ulster Final.

We extend our sympathy to his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
