Clones Notes

By Majella Boyd Tue 8th Jul

Congratulations: to Fintan Kelly and the Monaghan Senior team who defied history and a determined Armagh team to reach back to back Ulster finals.  It’s been 70 years since we last reached back to back Ulster Finals, that year 1944, we lost to Cavan by three points inspiration if it were needed against Donegal on the 20th July, a repeat of last year will do very nicely please lads.  With Monaghan in the final it leaves Clones a very special place and come the 20th of July there’s nowhere else a Clone would rather be.  But Fintan Kelly wasn’t the only clubman to show his skill on the field of play on Sunday with Jordan Reinhardt McCabe, Daragh McPhillips, Senán Monaghan and James McCabe all taking part in the half time game.  The lads thoroughly enjoyed the experience and you never know in a few years they could be making regular appearances in front of a packed crowd for club and county, mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad.

Disappointment for Anita Newell, Marion Shiels and the Monaghan Ladies in their Ulster Final defeat on Sunday to Armagh, the girls will lick their wounds and get ready for the journey through the backdoor and we all hope that they’ll still have a say in this year’s championship.  You’ve made us all very proud all season and we wish them well for the rest of the campaign.

Well done: to Cameron Dowds and Ollie Clerkin who both played well in a U-15 blitz v Tyrone and Armagh in Cloghan on Saturday.  These two talented footballers have big futures ahead of them and we wish them continued success.

Cul Camps: an amazing seventy children took part in last week’s Kellogg’s Cul camp in Clones.  Kieran Hughes was on hand to give out the awards.  In glorious conditions everyone had a fantastic time, Comhghairdeas arís to everyone who took part.

Big Thank you: Go raibh mile maith agat to everyone who played a key role for the club volunteering at the weekend, stewards, shop workers, program and ice-cream sellers your efforts don’t go unnoticed.  There was great sport and banter even before the Monaghan victory and as H.Jackson Brown Jr. put it “remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”

Seniors: St.Tiarnachs Park will see football for the fifth weekend in a row this Sunday with the visit of Inniskeen for round 12 of the Intermediate league at 2pm, the lads would appreciate your support.

Reserves: play Emyvale on Wednesday the 16th at home with a throw-in time of 8pm.

U21’s have their first outing at home to Latton this Friday with an away fixture to Killeevan the following Friday both games throw-in at 8pm.  It’s been a while since we’ve had an U21 team and we wish Daragh Holland and the team the very best of luck.

Minors: played Doohamlet in round six of the McElvaney Recycling Div.2 League on Tuesday evening in Eire Og and are away to Carrickmacross on Tuesday in the first round of the championship with a throw-in time of 7:30pm.

U16’s: A and B teams are out this week with the B team playing Latton last Monday and Rockcorry this evening in the big field, throw-in for this Div4 game is 6:45pm.  The A team are playing Killeevan this evening in the Div3 fixture also at home with an 8pm throw-in.  The lads and their mentors would appreciate your support.

U8’s Blitz:  took place in Currin last weekend with a Clones selection taking on teams from Currin, Aghabog, Scotstown and Killeevan.  There was a fantastic display from our team in ideal conditions.  Team: Ceara Monaghan, Pat O’Shaughnessy, Daragh McElvaney, James Mulhall, Micheal McCaughey, Daithi Sheerin, Oisin Sheerin, Caoláin Clerkin, Thomas Mulhall & Jamie McCaughey.

Congratulations:  to Clones Native Gerry Quinn who has been appointed as the new Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) president.  Gerry’s a son of former secretary Ben Quinn and his wife Nora.  He’s currently a second level teacher in County Laois and will take a two year sabbatical in order to fulfil his role as TUI president.  It’s a fantastic opportunity and for Gerry and evidence if it were needed of the talent within the club and its environs.
