Community Development
The GAA have worked hard over the past few years trying to include all groups and nationalities in our games. With this in mind over the past month Monaghan Coaching & Games and particularly Ann McKenna has organised a number of different events and fun days for under represented groups in our community. By just reading the reports and looking at the pictures below it is quite evident that everyone who took part in all the activities really enjoyed them and hopefully all came away loving the GAA all the more!
Coaching on the Green
Venue; Monaghan Town
Date; 7th June 2014
The GAA is about being open and welcoming to all members of our communities over the past few years there has been a huge influx of foreign nationals and the G.A.A. recognises that these communities have the potential to make a sporting contribution. With this in mind the Gaa have been running ‘Coaching on the green’ Days in different parts of the County. This year we held a fun day in Monaghan Town we had a great turn out on the day with 40 children taking part age 5-14 years old. We had fun games in Football and Hurling with face painting, balloon making, music and refreshments for everyone. All the kids went home with a smile on their face and hopefully it will inspire them to take up football or hurling in the future.
GAA For All (Adults)
Dates; 4th, 11th June
Venue; Cloghan County Grounds
At the start of June we ran 2 weeks of GAA FOR ALL day in Cloghan for all our Adult Disability groups in the County. They are a very busy group who take part in a variety of sports all year round but most of the groups were able to come. Our coaches put them through their paces working on fundamental movement skills and fun games in both football and hurling. All the participants seemed to enjoy the two days of coaching and we are already looking forward to seeing them over the winter months when they will be back with us again.
GAA For All (Youths)
Venue; Loughmourne NS and Threemilehouse NS
As part of the GAA sports inclusion for all, our coaching staff visited two Autism units in the area to coach the Fundamentals and GAA skills; there were 22 children who took part in total, aged between 5-12 years old. The coaches followed the stations format, which ensured the kids got full value of the coaching session. To follow on from this initiative Monaghan Coaching and Games in conjunction with the Monaghan Sports Partnership are running a Sports Inclusive Cul Camp for this age group in Monaghan Town from the 9th – 11th July. More information on this will be available closer to the date.
Intercultural Day
Venue; Monaghan Town
Date; 19th June 2014
Monaghan Coaching and Games organised a GoGames Blitz in for a number of the local primary schools who would have a high number of foreign national children in their schools. The idea behind the blitz is to give the kids a taste of our games in a fun and competitive environment, which will hopefully spark an interest of our games in the kids. Twelve teams took part of the blitz with over 80 boys and girls taking part. All the children seemed to enjoy not only the fine weather but also the games.
