St. Macartan’s College sixth year student Darren Doherty created a little piece of sporting history for the Sem in March by winning the school’s first ever All Ireland 40 x 20 Senior Colleges Singles title. Darren qualified for the finals after an impressive Ulster Colleges campaign followed by a 15 – 6, 15 – 8 semi-final victory against Daniel Relihan from Charleville CBS Cork. Darren’s opponent in the final played at Kingscourt was the impressive Dylan Sheridan from St. Ciaran’s CS Kells. The game ebbed and flowed in game one with both players impressing with their serves, pass shots and kills. The eventual winner certainly didn’t have it all his own way in the early stages of the game. However, game one finished 15 – 7 after Darren took control of the pivotal centre court position. This dominance continued in the second game which Darren won 15 – 3. Darren’s medal tally in the Sem colours now stands at 6 Ulster and 4 All Ireland titles and sees him talk over as the most successful St. Macartan’s College handballer to date in the school’s proud handballing history.
Four St. Macartan’s College and Monaghan Harps Handball Club members Justas
Dambinskas, Konrad Kowal, Hubert Scheinbach and Cáileán Myles won the
Ulster Council GAA organised One Wall Championships at St. Ciaran’s College
Ballygawley. The competition was open to First Year students in southern
schools and their age equivalent Second Year students in the northern
schools. St. Macartan’s won the right to represent Co. Monaghan by virtue
of a very narrow victory earlier in March in the final of the County
Monaghan section against Beech Hill College. In the finals, the St.
Macartan’s and Monaghan representatives were victorious in their league
section against St. Patrick’s College Downpatrick and a tie break win
against Dean Maguire School Loughmagrory. This earned the Sem a place in
the final against the winners of section B, St. Patrick’s College Cavan.
This proved to be a very one sided affair which St. Macartan’s won easily.
