Rockcorry Notes

Speedy Recovery

Firstly, this week, on behalf of everyone at the club I want to extend our best wishes to Mark McGuirk after he sustained a horrible knee injury last Wednesday 2nd April while playing for the Monaghan Under 21 team against Cavan in the Cadbury’s Ulster Championship semi-final. We wish him a speedy recovery back to full fitness and hope to see him out and about wearing the ‘green & white’ jersey as soon as possible.

Well Done

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Monaghan senior team who secured promotion back to the top flight of the National Football League and in doing so have set up a mouth-watering clash against Donegal in the Division 2 play-off. So once gain a massive well done on an outstanding achievement and all the best in the National Football League final which is scheduled for Sunday 27th April.

Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League

As the old saying goes “goals win games” and when our reserve footballers travelled to Lough Egish last Saturday 5th April to play Aughnamullen, in the Platinum Tanks reserve football league division 2, this was certainly the case as it was Aughnamullen who got the goals and raised two green flags at crucial moments during this highly entertaining and exciting encounter and they emerged with the spoils on a final score-line Aughnamullen 2-13 Rockcorry 0-10. On reflection, the score-line would suggest, this was not a happy day for our reserve footballers, but in truth the score-line does little justice to a battling performance from the lads. They approached the challenge with creditable courage and the bottom line is that at times we were the better side and had we converted our possession onto the scoreboard this clash might have turned out differently! Instead, we paid a heavy price for a number of unforced errors and lapses of concentration that were simply and painfully punished by Aughnamullen at every opportunity. Hard luck lads it was a brave effort and you can take a lot of positives away from the match so moving forward please keep up the commitment at training because the next outing in the league campaign is on Wednesday 23rd April when we host Sean McDermott’s at 7.30pm.  A full match report and a selection of action photographs can be viewed on our official website www.rockcorrygaa.ie or visit our Facebook page.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Fixtures

This Saturday 12th April our senior team will be back in action with a home game against Inniskeen and the match has a throw-in time of 7.00pm. They have another home game on Wednesday 16th April when they entertain Carrickmacross at 7.15pm and on Sunday 20th April they travel to play Tyholland at 4pm.

Irish Cancer Society

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past month or so you should be very familiar with the ‘NMS’ which simply translates to “No Makeup Selfie” where ladies take pictures of themselves without makeup and post onto a social media site. The NMS nomination campaign has taken the country by storm and has raised a significant amount of money for the Irish Cancer Society.

I know feelings have been divided and whether your opinion is for or against this craze you can’t but agree that the campaign has captured the imagination of the public and has definitely raised awareness of Cancer and has helped raise money for research through donations which in my opinion can only be a very positive thing. While ladies have been posting NMS and going ‘all natural’ the men have hijacked the trend and have decided to get involved by posting pictures of themselves with makeup plastered on! When I attended training this evening (Friday 4th April) I was overrun by the lads dressed up in drag as some went the whole way wearing dresses, mascara, lip-stick and wigs while others obviously wore customs from a Halloween party but I have to say all their efforts were commendable and well done to everyone for taking part. On a positive note, I can only hope that these photographs can inspire other GAA clubs within the county or country to do their own bit of charitable work and raise more money for this worthy cause. If people would like to make a donation towards the Irish Cancer Society you can simply text “PINK” or “DAFF” to 50300 and donate €4 or alternatively please “like” the article on our Facebook page and for every “like” the club will make a special donation towards the Irish Cancer Society. So get liking!!!

Under 12 Spring League

The next outing for the under 12 footballers is a home game against Tyholland tomorrow evening Friday 11th April at 6.30pm.

Under 14 Fixtures

Our under 14 footballers maintained their unbeaten start to this year’s league campaign when they secured a comprehensive victory against Oram in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league last Saturday 5th April. The game was played in mostly dull and overcast conditions but incredibly the standard of play was entertaining with constant passages of football as both sides gave a fine and spirited display of football. After a slow start and a few early let-offs we gradually settled and took a lead that we would never relinquish and after the first fifteen minutes we lead by 1-1 to 2-3. We continued to dominate the match and stretched our advantage to ten points to hold a comfortable lead, leading 1-3 to 3-7 at the half time interval. The lads certainly stepped up the pace in the third period and laid siege in the Oram half as our play became more direct and we fired over some impressive scores to lead by 1-5 to 7-10. The final quarter was evenly balanced as Oram continued to battle hard for every ball and the game ended Oram 3-6 Rockcorry 8-14. A selection of action shots can be viewed on our official website www.rockcorrygaa.ie or visit our Facebook page. Their next game will be on Saturday 19th April when they entertain near neighbours Aghabog and throw-in time is 12 noon.

Under 16 Fixtures

The under 16 league starts on Thursday 10th April and our first outing is against Scotstown at Pairc Mhuire at 6.30pm.

Under 14 Development Squad

I have been informed by our youth officer, Pascal Smyth, that Pauric O’Brien has been recalled onto the County under 14 development squad trails which take place this Saturday 12th April in Cloghan, Annyalla.  I have watched Pauric progress through the under 8’s, 10’s and 12 age groups and he is certainly developing into a fine footballer. He has been performing well for our under 14 team and on behalf of everyone from the club I would like to wish him well in his endeavours to attain a place on the Monaghan county development squad. Go out and give it your best shot Pauric.
