It was a good weekend for Monaghan, with three teams getting the better of their Louth opponents. Goals by Gavin Doogan and Dermot Malone helped the senior footballers to beat the Wee County in the Allianz National Football League Division Two on Sunday, while earlier in the same day, Monaghan made it back-to-back wins in the Allianz National Hurling League Division 3A when Hugh Byrne hit 11 points, including a late winner, as the hosts came from six points down in Aughnamullen. The minor hurlers had a comprehensive win over Louth in their Ulster Minor Hurling League Division Two opener on Saturday, with Ronan Curran (two), Jamie Dooley, Micheál Mac Suibhne and Conor Flynn among the goal-scorers. There was no clean sweep, however, as the ladies fell to a narrow defeat at home to Kerry, ending their unbeaten start to the National Football League Division One.
Truagh fell short in their bid to become the first Monaghan winner of the Bank of Ireland Ulster Club Under-21 Football Championship in Creggan on Saturday. A goal by tournament top scorer Christopher McKenna wasn’t enough for the Gaels, who lost out to Clonoe from Tyrone on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-4.
There was action in all four divisions of the Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League over the weekend. Clontibret, Scotstown and Truagh all lifted reserve trophies in 2013 and they each started 2014 on a high note with wins over Monaghan Harps, Magheracloone and Latton respectively in Division 1A, while Emyvale, Tyholland and Ballybay saw off Cremartin, Drumhowan and Castleblayney in Division 1B. Carrickmacross, Éire Óg, Donaghmoyne and Aughnamullen got the better of Inniskeen, Rockcorry, Corduff and Oram in Division Two, while Doohamlet drew with Seán McDermotts and the sole Division Three game saw Aghabog battle past Clones.
