Rockcorry Notes

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

The Oxford English dictionary defines the word ‘character’ as ‘the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual’. It also describes the word ‘guts’ as ‘personal courage and determination, toughness of character’. When our senior team travelled to play Creamartin in the opening round of the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football league on Sunday 23rd March they showed both virtues in abundance and quite frankly they had to because at times they were living off scraps as Cremartin put us under fierce pressure during a fascinating and absorbing encounter. Overall this was a merited victory and while we did have our share of ‘Lady Luck’ the work-rate and spirit from all our players was very evident. They showed remarkable guts, determination and character during this highly entertaining match but particularly during the final moments of the game where they revealed their bottle and dug very deep to hold on for a deserved win by the narrowest of margins Cremartin 1-7 Rockcorry 0-11. A full match report and a selection of action shots can be view at www.rockcorrygaa.ie or visit our Facebook page. Well done lads, it’s good to start the season with a positive result and hopefully you will continue to put in the hard work at training and be ready for the next outing which provisionally is a home game against Inniskeen on Sunday 13th April. (Official fixture to be confirmed).

Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Div 2

Our reserve footballers will be back in action this Sunday 30th March with a home game against Carrickmacross and the match has a throw-in time of 12.30pm.

Cadbury’s Ulster Under 21 Championship

Well done to the Monaghan under 21 team who defeated Down last Wednesday evening in the Cadbury’s Ulster Under 21 Championship. They now progress to play local rivals Cavan in the semi-final of the competition and on behalf of the club I would like to wish them all the best.

Under 12 Spring League

The next outing for the under 12 footballers is a home game against Sean McDermott’s on Saturday 29th March at 12 noon.

Under 14 Fixtures

Our under 14 footballers commenced their Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league campaign on Saturday 23rd March and got off to a perfect start after a severe test against a determined St. Tiarnach-Sarsfields  outfit. It was certainly a day for your waterproof gear and for wearing your winter woolies because the game was played in very cold, wet, slippery and really misery conditions but in fairness despite the awful conditions it was amazingly exciting and a very entertaining match. The battled hard throughout the match and during the closing stages they managed to notch over some important scores to possibly just about deserve the victory on a final score Rockcorry 7-15 St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 8-10. A full match report and a selection of action shots can be viewed on our website www.rockcorrygaa.ie of visit our Facebook page. There next outing is on Saturday 5th April when they travel to play Oram at 12 noon.

Under 16 Fixtures

The under 16 league starts on Thursday 10th April and our first outing is against Scotstown at Pairc Mhuire at 6.30pm.

Carwash Fund Raiser

On behalf of the juvenile committee I would like to say a massive thank-you to everyone who turned up at Coyle’s Service Station last Saturday to get their cars washed. The event was a huge success and well done to all the under 14 and 16 footballers, who braved the bitterly cold weather conditions, and armed with hoses, scrubbers and sponges they enthusiastically cleaned the cars and left them sparkling. I better not forget their mentors Felix Grannigan & Conor Brannigan who also chipped in and got their hands ditty, or should I say clean, and even our Youth Officer Pascal Smyth added a bit of elbow grease when the line never let up! I am not sure of the car count but it was pretty busy on occasions and all customers drove away very happy with their car glowing & shining. If, however, you were not able to get down today then you can still make a donation towards our underage teams no matter how much or how little you can afford you can make a difference and your contribution can help us continue our work to promote, nurture, value and encourage all kids to participate and have fun at the grass-root and underage levels. Finally, the last word goes to Gerry & Andrea Coyle who offered their wonderful facilities to allow us hold this novel fund raising event. We are a small community and therefore it is really important that we rally and support each other during these testing times and it’s great to know that we have the support of local a business such as Gerry & Andrea Coyle and we sincerely thank them. Once again, thank-you to everybody for your kind donations and generous support which is always very much appreciated and until the next time please drive carefully.
