ASAP Policy
The aim of the ASAP programme is to reduce the harm caused by alcohol and other drugs. The programme forms part of the GAA’s attempts to tackle what has unfortunately become an ever more obvious problem in Irish society. Brian Carroll, our newly appointed ASAP Officer, along with the management committee has developed a Drug and Alcohol Policy and will distribute copies of the policy at our Registration night.
Hall of Fame Award (2013)
Achievements both on and off the field were recognised last Friday 28th February when we held our annual social & presentation night in Fitzpatrick’s. Our Hall of Fame award is presented each year to a person singled out for lifelong dedication to the club. It recognises those members who have distinguished themselves over the years and is the highest honour the club may bestow upon an individual member. Since the introduction of the award in 1995/1996 we have identified and honoured many legends of the club and this year I am delighted to announce that the management committee, voted unanimously, to pay tribute and declared Ollie McQuillan this year’s Hall of Fame recipient. I have known and worked with Ollie for many years and he is a true gentleman and really epitomises what the GAA stands for. He is an amazing man a great character and has been a loyal servant to the club and he is certainly worthy and deserves this award. We are immensely pleased, honoured and proud to induct him into our Hall of Fame for his outstanding contribution towards the club and on behalf of everyone at the club I would like to congratulate Ollie and thank him for all he has done for the club. We deeply appreciate your service, your support and your efforts over the years and may I just add that this is by no means a signal for you to take the foot off the pedal and retire! I have no doubt that you will continue to play an influential role within the Rockcorry GAA club and we look forward to your continued involvement for many, many years ahead.
Senior Player of Year 2013
Before the 2013 season started we knew that playing senior football was always going to be very difficult and challenging and to single out one player who stood out from the rest is also very tricky because all the lads deserve much applause for their commitment, dedication and performances during a tough and demanding league campaign. However, having said all that, Noel Carroll, or better known to his team-mates as “Nudie”, was truly immense for the team during our historic senior season playing in the top flight of Monaghan football and for that reason he was named the senior player of the year 2013. Without doubt he is one of the finest players of his generations with countless abilities that include the speed of Usain Bolt, the finesse & power of Mohammad Ali, the passion of Rafael Nadal and he has the enthusiasm and the willpower to deliver for his club which for me is the most appealing factor. Congratulations little brother on a fantastic achievement on being named senior player of the year 2013 and I look forward to supporting you and all the lads in the clubs endeavours of returning to the top flight of Monaghan GAA in 2014.
Reserve Player of the Year 2013
With regards to the reserve player of the year it was no coincidence that Garry Calvert won the managers vote after an impressive season with the reserve team. I imagine you’re all familiar with the well-known saying that goes, “the old dog for the hard road” and just like a fine bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon Garry is maturing better with age as he continues to deliver courageous and impressive performances. He is renowned for his no nonsense approach and a notable feature of his character is his fiery spirit which more than often takes him to the edge of the limit as he is always one to get ‘stuck-in’ to the action! Actions are sometimes greater than words and he has proudly poured his heart and soul into the club. He is a colourful character, an outstanding club man, an outstanding player whose heart and whose interest is still very much about wearing the green & white jersey. Let me tell you folks there’s life in the old dog yet!
