Éire Óg Notes

By Mary McEneaney Wed 26th Mar

Under 14s’: Eire Og Under 14s’ got their 2014 campaign underway with a hard fought win over Drumhowan at the mid-Monaghan venue on Saturday. Played in wintry conditions this game was in the melting pot right up to the last couple of minutes. Both teams fielded a little under strength due to various circumstances. This contest had everything, goals, points, yellow card, black cards and 100% effort from both sets of players. The game got underway with both sets of defenders on top and we had to wait six minutes for the first score to come, a Drumhowan point followed immediately by another minor for the Geraldines. The tit for tat pattern that would continue for the rest of the game now became apparent with Eire Og replying with two points of their own. The first goal of the game arrived soon after with the Drumhowan lads finding the net. Eire Og replied with 3 points to leave it all-square at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same with the Drumhowan outfit getting slightly the better of the exchanges and they reached the half-time whistle leading on a 3-7 to 2-8 scoreline.  In the third period the pendulum again swung back in favour of the Na Mullai boys and they held a one point lead as the proceedings entered its final quarter. The third quarter also saw a number of cards shown to both teams as the contest reached boiling point. Both teams spurned a number of scoring opportunities early in the 4th quarter, before Drumhowan went into a two point lead as the game reached the final 5 minutes. This group of Eire Og lads however play to the final whistle as they proved in last year’s Under 12 final, and they again struck late with three well taken goals to snatch the laurels on the slightly flattering final score of Eire Og 7-12,Drumhowan 5-11. All in all this was a very satisfying opening performance from these young Under 14s’. Our next game is a home fixture v Clontibret. The panel on duty in Drumhowan was Ryan Corley,Darragh Hamill,Robert Haynes,Gary Kerr,Donal Leonard,Kian McAree,Kyle McAree,Leon McCabe,Jamie McMahon,Adam Murtagh,Brendan Reilly and Caine Toal.
