Round-up (February 15-16)

In a mixed weekend for Monaghan teams, the ladies footballers led the way with an excellent win away to All-Ireland champions Cork in the NFL Division One on Sunday. Goals by Cathriona McConnell and Ciara McAnespie propelled Monaghan to a second win of the league at the expense of the holders in Mallow.

Monaghan hurlers relinquished a lead late on at home to Longford in their Allianz NHL Division 3A opener. Goals by Hugh Byrne and Conor McKenna had Monaghan well placed to get two points in Inniskeen, but they conceded a brace of majors to Gareth Ghee, which saw Longford steal a dramatic 3-11 to 2-13 win.

Meanwhile, the Under-21 footballers exited the Shamrock Cup with a narrow defeat against Tyrone on Saturday (see report).

Truagh advanced to another provincial semi-final when they defeated Armagh champions St. Patrick’s, Cullyhanna in the Ulster Club Under-21 FC at Creggan on Sunday, helped by a late goal by Christopher McKenna.

Doohamlet fell to their first defeat in Group A of the Quinn’s Corner Ulster Club Senior Football League when they lost to Sarsfields of Armagh on Sunday, but Inniskeen continued their unbeaten start to the Ulster Club IFC Group B with a one-point win over Ballymaguigan from Derry on Saturday.

St. Macartan’s College’s MacRory Cup quarter-final against St. Pat’s, Maghera was postponed twice: first on Friday and then on Tuesday.
