ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

17th December 2013

Season Greetings

This will probably be my last club notes of the year so on behalf of the club I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to everyone who has helped and supported the club during 2013. It has been a pleasure working with you all during the year and may the Christmas Season fill your home with joy, your heart with love and your life with laughter and I hope you all have a very Merry & Peaceful Christmas and a Happy & Prosperous New Year to you and your family.

Stay Safe – Stay Alive
Christmas is certainly a busy time of the year with loads of presents to buy and friends to entertain. It is also a joyous time of the year and it is easy to get swept away with all the festivities and excitement. Please keep your friends and family safe this festive season and seriously stay safe and please, please, please do not drink and drive.

Rockcorry Bowls Tournament

They say “there’s no show like a Joe show” but on Monday 9th December it was a case of “there’s no show like a bowls show” as the local bowls club tournament concluded with a fantastic night of bowls – what an amazing night! More than 200 players from across the county took part in the competition including players who travelled from across Ulster and Leinster and well done to all the bowlers who took part. After a week of very close contests the last night was very intense with contenders battling it out for a place in the final spot. The final between Paul Duff/Andrea Flanagan v Diarmuid McMahon/Shane Hand did not disappoint and proved to be top quality and provided plenty of tense moments. It was nip and tuck as both pairs were pushed all the way and turned out to be very a close encounter and could have finished either way because throughout the match there was only a shot difference of only one which fluctuated up and down and after ten ends the match finished all square. With scores level both pairs had to negotiate a tie breaker and during the final end it drew a lot of ooohs and aaaghs from the crowd of supporters & spectators. In the end however, it all came down to the very last bowl with Diarmuid McMahon & Shane Hand just edging out Paul Duff & Andrea Flanagan (8-7) and congratulations to them on their victory. At the presentation the chairman of the Rockcorry Bowls club Pat Brannigan paid tribute to his committee for organising the event and thanked tournament co-ordinator Michael Hand and umpire Francis Farmer who gave generously of their time during the week. He thanked all the bowlers for taking part and congratulated the winners Diarmuid McMahon & Shane Hand for becoming the first pair to win the title and the Bosco Carroll Memorial Cup. On behalf of my family, I would just like to add and congratulate the members of the local bowls club who were involved in organising the competition. Your efforts were rewarded with a very memorable and successful tournament that delivered endless amounts of excitement and enjoyment and speaking to many people present they enjoyed themselves thoroughly with many positive responses. One of the highlights of the event was the marvelous spread of hoot food, sandwiches, cakes, mince pies, apple tarts, lemon meringue and the endless supply of cups of tea, coffee and soft drinks that never failed to delight and well done to all the ladies for their hard work. It was a magical tournament and I look forward to next years with great interest and anticipation and all that’s left to say is – I better start practicing for next year!

Annual Yearbook – ‘Our Journey’

Don’t forget that the clubs annual yearbook entitled ‘Our Journey’ is now on sale. The yearbook costs €20 and is overflowing with photographs and is packed full of wonderful memories that hopefully you will all cherish for a very, very long time. It takes the same format as previous editions and is divided into sections and features 400 pages (full colour) and records our historic journey through senior football and includes a great selection of underage teams and other various memorabilia.

Buy a Bulb

If you were not able to attend the table quiz last Friday night and if you have not already supported the Christmas Tree fund raising campaign you can help by buying a bulb or alternatively by making a donation towards the cause. Sponsorship cards are currently in circulation and they would deeply appreciate your support. Once again a massive well done to all the workers and the Christmas tree committee, the tree looks totally amazing. Merry Christmas everybody.

Deepest Sympathy

On behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Dan Gavney (New York) who passed away last weekend. Not a lot of people would be aware of this in 1983 Dan was a founding member of the Friends of Rockcorry GAA from New York who organised a fund raising dance with all proceeds going towards the development of Pairc Naomh Mhuire and was very appreciated at the time. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Wedding Congratulations

I would like to extend our best wishes and congratulations to Grainne McQuillan and Edmund Lennon who got married last weekend. We wish you a lifetime of the greatest joy, love and happiness together.
