Minor Double –Last Sunday St Tiarnach’s, Eire Og / Clones team pulled off a terrific Minor double by defeating Doohamlet in the league decider. Two weeks ago the North Monaghan side defeated the same opposition in one of the best games played in Monaghan this year prior to the Junior Championship Final. The Championship game was pure football, end to end stuff, with St Tiarnach’s snatching victory in injury time by one point.

Last Sunday’s game was quite the opposite, a dogged affair. Doohamlet set out their stall to neutralise our playmakers with very cynical play from the start. By half time both teams were reduced from thirteen a side to eleven a side. Even after a magnificent save by James Morrow from a penalty, St Tiarnachs went in at the short whistle 0-2 (points from James McElwain and Ben Daly) to 0-9 down. Doohamlet seemed to handle the wet conditions better and took most of their chances. On the other hand we had numerous chances around their goal area but were unable to convert.

At half time the management team had to re-gig the team around to deal with less personnel and some injuries but it took a while for the team to settle in. Doohamlet took the initiative again and registered another three points at the beginning of the second half. St Tiarnach’s looked dead and buried at this stage, but cream will always come to the top.

James Mealiff’s re-introduction to the middle of the field sparked a revival and he gave a master class performance. The whole team lifted their game, goals from Michael Tierney, Sean Cunningham and James Mealiff reduced the deficit. Points from  James McElwain. Eoin McQuaid, Michael Tierney and James Mealiff pulled St Tiarnachs ahead.  Massa( James Morrow) saved the day with another two terrific saves in the second half from close range. At the final whistle St Tiarnachs had a four point cushion after a ten point deficit, showing great character and determination. This was a terrific team performance, well done to the whole squad who have trained together from last March. Every training session seen virtually 100% turn out. For an amalgamated team the commitment was excellent and great credit must go to the players and their management team of Seamus Morrow, Jimmy Corr, Mickey Tierney, Gerry O’Gorman and Joe Leonard.

The Eire Og senior management will be delighted at the talent that is coming through in the shape of James Leonard, Shane Ward, Mattie McElvaney, James Morrow, Michael Tierney, Dermott Gleeson, Joe Gavin, Corey McAree and Kevin Sheridan who all played their part all season and in both finals. The Eire Og club would like to thank the Clones Club for all their help throughout the year and the use of their facilities. Great friendships have been made this year both by players and management teams. This is a year will never forget for the rest of their lives. Enjoy your success lads you deserve all the plaudits.

The victorious St Tiarnachs squad was: James Morrow, Shane ward, Shane Slowey, James Leonard, Ben Daly, Kevin Reilly, James McElwain, James Mealiff, Dermott Gleeson, Darek Sviridenka, Mathew McElvaney. Eoin McQuaid, Michael Tierney, Cian O’Connor, Sean Cunningham, Michael Morgan, Tristan Reevey, Corey McAree, , Niall Cadden, Darragh McDermott, Joe Gavin, Jake Rehill and Kevin Sheridan
