Clontibret
Senior League
Clontibret 0-13, Magheracloone 0-11. A good display against Magheracloone last Saturday got us back to winning ways. We have an away match against Rockcorry on Sunday at 2.30pm.
Ireland v Australia
Well done to Conor McManus who scored 0-5 in Ireland’s win over Australia in the first test match in Breffni Park last Saturday. Good luck for the second and final test this Saturday in Croke Park at 7pm.
Intermediate Final
Thanks to our loyal helpers for their assistance at the finals last Sunday at the last fixtures for our grounds for the year. The club is indebted to all those who helped out at matches in any way throughout the year.
The Late Francie McNally
Francie McNally was one of a kind, having been synonymous with our club for the past seventy years as player, supporter and later as Club President. He lived for football, and could recall in graphic detail particular moves, incidents and scores from matches he played in and watched over the past eight decades. No matter where he went Francie would meet up with someone he played with or played against, at either club or county level, and the matches would be replayed again and again.
Francie began his football career in the fields around Castleshane and quickly came to the notice of neighbouring clubs but when the O’Neills club reformed in the mid forties he found his spiritual home helping them to win the Junior Championship in 1947 and going on to win four-in-a-row senior championships from 1949 to 1952. He was a non-stop player who gave his all from midfield, half forward or full forward. He played for many years with Monaghan, helping them to Dr Lagan Cup success in 1950. The demands of life as a farmer clashed with football and often he had to leave the corn-field to go straight to the football field, but would be rewarded when a boon of his colleagues would gather to help with the harvest.
He continued to take a great interest in football at local, county and national level and was proud of the successes of both Clontibret and Monaghan teams particularly following the progress of Vinnie, Conor and Dessie this year and would have been proud to know that he was carried to his last resting place in Latlurcan by his clubmen ……and he didn’t like Sean Cavanagh’s tackle. May he Rest in Peace.
The club extends its deepest sympathy to the McNally and Mooney families.
