Ulster Immediate Championship: Aghabog 2-13 Grange 5-11. We crashed out of the Ulster campaign last Sunday after a bruising encounter in Grange, Armagh. Without several key members of the team missing through injury etc, the girls put in a huge effort in what was a very physical encounter. The referee failed to take charge and punish the cynical fouling and dangerous tackling from Grange, that continued throughout the game. We played with the wind in the first half and Laura got us on the scoreboard with a point. Grange responded with a goal and a point but then it was all Aghabog with some creative moves resulting in excellent scores from Ellen, Reggie,Laura and Aisling. Our first goal was a sweet move started in the backline, expertly finished by Reggie. Ellen followed this by another goal, assisted by the wind. Niamh could do little about the goals scored as they were powerfully struck each time. The Aghabog back line of Shannon, Orla and Michaela had their hands full with the Grange full forward line but they were intercepting passes and combining well with Siobhan and Bridin. Charlotte was sweeping up any loose ball and creating the attacking moves. The endless running of Anita and Lisa was helping to create the chances up front and defend. The forward line of Laura, Ellen, Katie, Aisling, Reggie and Rebecca were giving the Grange defenders the run-around and the Grange inability to stop them, caused the dragging down and pulling of our forwards which went unpunished. Considering the encounters throughout the game, unbelievably, it was Ellen who was sin-binned with 10 minutes to go and this affected the outcome of the game. The girls were under severe pressure with 14 players and in this time Grange were able to put more scores on the board.
The ruling body of the Ulster ladies GAA needs to assess their refereeing standards as this game clearly showed a reluctance of the referee to enforce the rules and punish players for some dangerous tackles that could have resulted in a serious injury to a player.
