Monaghan’s minor hurlers fell short in their All-Ireland ‘C’ Championship bid when they lost by 1-15 to 0-8 in Saturday’s final against Mayo. After an even start, Monaghan ended the first half trailing by 0-11 to 0-5 and there was no way back for them in the second half, despite their best efforts to close the gap, as Mayo struck for the only goal to put the result beyond doubt.
Last year’s finalists Clontibret and Ballybay are the first two teams through to this year’s Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship semi-finals after their wins over the weekend. Conor McManus hit 1-8 to lead Clontibret past Scotstown on Saturday (see match report), while Hugh and Colin Malone got the goals that separated Ballybay from Monaghan Harps on Sunday. Latton kept their hopes alive when they held off a second-half comeback from Rockcorry under lights from Friday. Latton looked comfortable when leading by six points at half-time, but they were forced to hang on in the end for a two-point win which puts them through to a Round 3B clash with Scotstown. Doohamlet will battle it out with Magheracloone for the right to play Monaghan Harps after the 2012 IFC winners overcame Carrickmacross on Sunday (see match report).
Donaghmoyne won their long-awaited McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship Round 1A match against Tyholland on Saturday. The teams were evenly-matched for most of the hour, but a 53rd-minute goal by Colm Connolly pushed Donaghmoyne on to victory.
Truagh fell to only their second defeat of the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League campaign when they lost to Corduff on Sunday, while Currin beat neighbours Clones to return to second place ahead of Inniskeen, who had leapfrogged them by beating Cremartin on Friday evening. Drumhowan won the battle of the relegated teams against Aughnamullen on Sunday.
Blackhill came from six points down at half-time to pip Scotstown and stay top of the Eurotech Junior Football League, a point ahead of Killanny, who had a comprehensive win over Aghabog. Oram are now third after their game was conceded by Toome and Emyvale lost to Seán McDermotts. Killeevan found the net four times in their defeat of Éire Óg.
Killanny are through to the GRM Minor Football League Division Two after they edged out Cúchulains Sarsfields in Saturday’s semi-final, while St. Tiarnach’s were convincing winners in their Division Three last-four clash with Corduff.
In Saturday’s Gerry’s Prepared Veg. juvenile finals, there were wins for Doohamlet (Under-16), Emerald Sarsfields and Clones/Currin (Under-14), Magheracloone, Inniskeen, Feargal O’Hanlons and Castleblayney Hurling (Under-12).
Meanwhile, Donaghmoyne finished strongly to see off Emyvale and make it 11 consecutive Ladies Senior Football Championship titles on Saturday.
