Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship

I would like to begin this week’s club notes by using the words of Marty Morrissey’s brilliant radio commentary at the end of the hurling final last Sunday “Oh Holy Moses…what an amazing game” and first things first, I have to give credit to all the lads for producing such an incredibly gutsy performance, against Latton last Friday night, that nearly produced an almighty shock! This was an absorbing contest where the lads showed great determination, enthusiasm  and despite the end result it was a battling and courageous display against one of the top teams in the county and we definitely deserved to get something from this local showdown. In the end, however, it was Latton who maintained their composure and prevailed by just two points as they were forced to dig very deep during the closing stages of this highly entertaining match to emerge victorious and proceed to the next round of the Gormley uPVC Championship on a score-line Rockcorry 1-13 Latton 2-12. It was a true team effort and there were excellent performances on every line across the field and I have to say the lads represented the club with pride and heart and they fully deserve our acclaim for their efforts during this electrifying clash. Hard luck lads, it’s a killer to lose a game in that way but you can certainly hold your heads high because we are very proud of you. Please log on to www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a detailed match report.

Speedy Recovery

On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to extend our best wishes to senior footballer Garry Calvert, who is expected to miss out on a number of league games, after suffering a serious and horrible eye injury during our clash against Latton.  We wish him a speedy recovery back to full health and hopefully we will see him in the green & white jersey before the end of the campaign.

Drumlin Credit Union SFL Fixtures

The senior team will be back in action on Saturday 21st September when they host Magheracloone. The game has a throw-in time of 5.30pm. The lads have worked extremely hard this year and have shown remarkable character against stronger opposition. Irrespective of the result go along to Pairc Naomh Mhuire and cheer on the lads because they deserve our backing so show your support for the remaining league games.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 Div 2B Shield Final

Our under 12 footballers travelled to Gavan Duffy Park, Monaghan to play Fergal O’Hanlon’s in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 2B Shield Final last Saturday 7th September and as expected there was very little between these sides as they served up a thrilling and a very enjoyable contest that ebbed and flowed from the throw-in. In the end, however, it was Fergal O’Hanlon’s ability to pick-off some impressive scores, especially dkkuring the second half, that was ultimately the difference as they secured the title by the narrowest of margins winning 3-2 to 1-9 and on behalf of the club I congratulate them on their victory. Hard luck boys and girls it was a great achievement to get to the final and on behalf of the club I would like to thank the players for all the work they put in during the year and thank the mentors John Elliott & Colm Donnelly and off course the first aid lady Marian Larmer. Finally, I would like to extend the clubs best wishes to Aaron Smyth, Gerry Larmer and Emma Mckeown who all picked up injuries during the game and let’s hope they will all be available and fit to take part in the Bosco Carroll Memorial Cup in October.

After Match Refreshments

They say that ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ but they also say ‘many hands make light work’ and the latter was certainly the case when the ladies of the club rolled up their sleeves and provided after match refreshments for the under 12 footballers, in St. Mary’s Hall, last Saturday after the Shield final. Once again they made sure everybody had a ‘full’ time and that nobody went home with an empty tummy. The food was delicious and many thanks to Ann Lynch, Martina McKeown, Tina Rooney, Aisling Donnelly &  Ann Carroll for their time & assistance.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 Shield Final

Our opposition in the under 14 Shield Final will be provided by Aghabog after they conceded against Drumhowan last Monday night. The final will take place on Saturday 21st September at 12 noon and the venue is to be confirmed.

Go Games Blitz

The last official Go Games Blitz for the under 8 footballers takes place this Saturday 14th September at the Monaghan GAA Training Centre located at Annyalla. The under 10 footballers will play in their last official blitz on Saturday 21st September and it will take place at St. Tiernach’s Park, Clones.

Rock Country Night

If you’re looking for the best darn County & Western music there’s no need to go rushing off to Nashville, Tennessee – or even Nathan Carter because on Friday 11th October “Rock Country” is coming back to town. That’s right folks, lasso up your friends and grab your best bib and tucker and have yourselves a thigh slapping, toe tapping, hand clapping night of fun, fun and fun. Our special guest and Master of Ceremonies will be the legendary Irish country singer Gloria. This night proved very popular last year and it’s easy to see why because once again we have assembled the finest singers from the village and surrounding areas to perform their favourite Country & Western classics. No other night does it like “Rock Country” with great songs performed by great singers and tickets will be on sale shortly for this amazing and mind-blowing show.

Memorial Tournaments

Just a reminder that the Terence Reilly Memorial Shield will take place on Saturday 28th September with competing teams including Aghabog, Cootehill, a club from Dublin and our own group of under 10 footballers. With regards to the Bosco Carroll Memorial Cup a date has not yet been set but depending on participating clubs it may take place on Saturday 12th October. Watch this space for further information.
