breakfast morning 2013

Breakfast morning: Our big breakfast morning takes place this Sunday (September 8) from 10am to 12.30pm. It’s a great way to set you up for the day, before watching the All-Ireland hurling final and heading to our SFC game against Ballybay. Tickets, on sale now from club members, cost €10 for adults or €5 for Under-12s and you can also pay in at the door. Everyone welcome!

Draw: We are taking part in a ‘Sportspersons Dream’ draw, which offers some amazing prizes, particularly for sports fans. We launched the draw in the clubhouse last Friday night with the help of sponsor Michelle McAnenly of ‘House of Labels’ and our county players Neil McAdam, Conor Galligan, Kevin Loughran and Fearghal McMahon, who posed for photos with the Ulster SFC and MFC trophies. Thanks to everyone who attended. Tickets are on sale now from club members and online – see link on our website.

Gavan Duffy Park: Saturday is a very busy day at Gavan Duffy Park, as we host an Under-10/Under-8 blitz in the morning, followed by an U-14 shield final (12pm) and two U-12 shield finals at 1.30 and 3pm and U-12 and senior ladies finals at 4.45 and 6.30. We need all hands on deck, so please help out if you can!

Our Under-12 Division 2B team before Saturday's league final

Our Under-12 Division 2B team before Saturday’s league final

U-12: Hard luck to both of our Under-12 football teams who lost narrowly in big games last Saturday. First up was the Division 1A shield semi-final at home to Magheracloone, where our lads enjoyed the better of the first period, with 2-1 by Luke Coyle and points by Tiarnán O’Rourke and Annan Connor giving them a 2-3 to 1-4 lead. A brace by Annan and a point from Brendan Óg Duffy kept our lads narrowly ahead after the restart and although Magheracloone drew level, Luke regained our lead late on. The visitors hit 1-1 in the last few minutes, however, to win by 3-7 to 2-7. Thanks to the players and their management of Finbarr Conlon and Chris Conway for their efforts all year.

Team and scorers: Ericus; Killian Conlon, Tiarnán O’Rourke (0-1); Andrew Lyden, Brendan Óg Duffy (0-1); Stephen Ward, Lorcan O’Rourke (Capt.); Annan Connor (0-3), Oisín Fagan; Lochlainn Power, Luke Coyle (2-2, 0-2f).

We then travelled to Blackhill for the Division 2B Cup Final against Donaghmoyne. Our lads struggled to make wind advantage count in the opening 20 minutes, despite points by Lochlainn Power, Shay Cooney and Dean Doherty, as we went in trailing by 1-4 to 0-3. However, our young team showed great spirit to drag themselves back into the game, with Craig Cooney finding the net from a quickly-taken free and the midfielders and backs gradually getting on top. Brendan Óg Duffy, who also rattled the crossbar with a powerful shot, scored a great goal to cut our deficit to just two points, but Donaghmoyne held on to win by 1-9 to 2-4. Well done to the lads on a very good year and thanks to Jimmy Croarkin, Pádraig Callan and everyone who helped out.

Team and scorers: Daragh Croarkin; Tiarnán O’Rourke, Brendan Óg Duffy (1-0); James McKenny, Liam Conway; Dean Doherty (Capt., 0-1), Nathan Lavery; Adam McGarry, Lochlainn Power (0-2, 1 ’45); Ryan Leonard, Shay Cooney (0-1, ’45).

Subs: Craig Cooney (1-0f), Ryan McSkeane, Che Treanor, Brian McAteer, Mark McManus, Evan Meehan, Conor Treanor, James Curley, Diarmuid McGee, Ben Myers, Jamie Coyle, Luke McManus, Seán Callan.

U-14: Our Under-14 Division Five team qualified for the league semi-final with two high-scoring wins in the last week. Last Thursday’s play-off against Clones/Currin in Scotshouse saw our lads win by 11-7 to 7-14 to book their place in the semi-final away to Scotstown, which took place on Monday evening. Our lads got off to a flying start, with goals by Aaron Coyle and Dylan Maguire and points by Adam O’Neill (three), Aaron, Colin Peppard and Corey McArdle giving them a 2-6 to 0-3 lead and although Scotstown closed the gap in the second quarter, three points from Aaron made the half-time score 2-9 to 1-5. The hosts kept the pressure on in the third quarter, although a goal by Colin ensured our lads took a 3-9 to 2-9 advantage into the final period. An exciting finish saw the lead change hands twice, with Adam finding the net for our lads and Brendan Óg Duffy (who had moved out of goals) scoring 1-1 and setting up another for Oisín Fagan, while Corey also hit a point to send our lads through on a scoreline of 6-11 to 4-12.

Team and scorers (v Scotstown): Brendan Óg Duffy (1-1); Seán Conway, Shane McCabe; Killian Conlon, Zach Mallen; Adam O’Neill (1-3), Lorcan O’Rourke; Dylan Maguire (1-0), Corey McArdle (0-2); Aaron Coyle (1-4, 0-2f), Colin Peppard (1-1).

Subs used: Dáire Martin, Killian McAdam, Stephen Ward, Oisín Fagan (1-0).

The final is now due to be played against Emerald Sarsfields in Aughnamullen this Saturday at 1.10pm. Best of luck to all involved.

Meanwhile, the Division One league semi-final at home to either Magheracloone or Killanny is due to be played on Monday at 6pm. Please check club website and social media in case of fixture changes.

Minors: Our minor footballers were due to play Magheracloone in the league semi-final this Saturday, but that has been postponed due to our dual players’ involvement with the county hurlers in the All-Ireland C Final against Mayo. We wish Ciarán, Tiarnán and Conor all the best on Saturday.

U-16: The Under-16 footballers finished the league campaign on a positive note with a 2-15 to 2-10 win in Clontibret last Thursday. Thanks to the players and Maurice Galligan, Pádraig Reilly and Gary McAleer for their efforts.

Sponsored walk: The juvenile club’s annual sponsored walk takes place on Saturday, September 28. Sponsorship cards are in circulation now.

Hurling:

Juveniles: Our Under-16s booked their place in the league final with a 5-11 to 1-5 win at home to Castleblayney in last Sunday’s semi-final. Please keep an eye on websites for details of the final.

The U-16 Championship Semi-Final against either Inniskeen or Clontibret is fixed for Monday week, September 16.

Training for all juveniles continues on Sunday mornings at 12pm.

County minors: Good luck to Tiarnán Bramley, Ciarán McQuaid, Conor O’Neill, Conor Burns, Paul Bannon, coach Alan Ryan and the Monaghan minors who take on Mayo in the All-Ireland Minor ‘C’ Championship Final on Saturday, in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim at 3pm.

Seniors: Our seniors fell to a disappointing nine-point defeat away to Inniskeen last Thursday in the league semi-final. After leading by a point at half-time (1-8 to 1-7), the second-half display failed to match that of the first 30 minutes. The squad still have an Ulster Championship contest against Craobh Rua, Camlough (Armagh) to look forward to on October 6.

Team and scorers: James Greenan; Micheál Ó Mordha, Jack Lee, Éanna Finlay; Pat Meehan, Shane Smyth, Alan Lee; Niall Hahessy (1-0), Gavin Baxter; Brendan McQuaid (1-1), Ross Corbett (0-1), Aodhán Óg McAnespie (0-3, 1f, 1 ’65); Dónal Hahessy (0-2), Alan Ryan (0-1), Raymond Lee (0-1).
