Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship Round 1B Replay
Doohamlet 1-10 Carrickmacross 0-7 8/9/13
Doohamlet overcame the handicap of having two men sent off in the first half to deservedly see off Carrickmacross in this SFC qualifier replay in Inniskeen on Sunday. Despite having Darren Connolly and Colin Walshe dismissed, the 13 men played the better football and a well-taken Ted Duffy goal led them to a prized senior championship win. Duffy, Barry McGinn and Barry McBennett accounted for all of Doohamlet’s scores, while Jason McElroy and Gabie Casey also did well, with Stephen Gollogly fighting a lonely battle for Carrick.
Doohamlet took an early lead when Barry McGinn converted a 20-metre free for a foul on Colin Walshe, but Peter O’Hanlon won and scored a 13-metre free for Carrick, who took the lead when Séamus Mulholland punched over the bar, but only after he and Laurence McNally both had shots saved by a combination of Doohamlet goalkeeper James Casey and two of his defenders. Doohamlet then had Darren Connolly sent off for striking Laurence McNally, but McGinn brought them level from a 30-metere free after a foul on Mark Murphy.
Stephen Gollogly tapped over a 13-metre free for a foul on Ryan McEnaney, but despite having Walshe sent off for a second booking, Doohamlet stayed on terms with a Barry McBennett point. Gollogly replied at the end of a counter-attack started by James McGeown, but a foul on Greg Duffy allowed McGinn to equalise from a 20-metre free before Gollogly linked up with Mulholland to kick the point that gave Carrick a 0-5 to 0-4 half-time lead.
A 30-metre free by McGinn, following a foul on Murphy, levelled it up again, only for Gollogly to reply with his third point from play, before Carrick had a penalty claim turned down for a tackle on Niall Loughman. A surging run by Jason McElroy created the game’s only goal, finished in style by Ted Duffy, before McGinn converted a 20-metre free for a foul on substitute Shane McManus. Loughman had a couple of glimpses of goal for Carrick, but he blazed one wide and had another blocked, while Doohamlet moved further clear when Ted Duffy tapped over after a Greg Duffy shot came back off the upright.
McBennett added a point after good work by Niall Connolly and Ted Duffy swung over a fine score to make it 1-4 without reply for Doohamlet, before Gollogly finally ended 22 scoreless minutes for Carrick when he won and scored a 20-metre free. Loughman was shown a second yellow late on and Doohamlet secured victory when McBennett took a pass from Ted Duffy and split the posts.
