There was mixed fortunes for Monaghan’s county teams over the bank holiday weekend, with the senior footballers edged out by Tyrone and the minor footballers battling past Tipperary in their All-Ireland quarter-finals on Saturday and Monday respectively. See match reports.
The finals of the Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Divisions 1A and IB were played last Friday, with Scotstown and Truagh coming out on top. O’Duffy Cup winners Clontibret were in pole position at half-time of the Division 1A Final, helped by two Ryan McGuigan goals, but 14-man Scotstown turned it around, with Paul Grant (0-6) and Elliott Maguire (1-2) top-scoring. Meanwhile, Truagh recovered from conceding goals to Ballybay’s Cillian McAviney and Shane McGuinness to dominate the second half, with Aidan Coyle finding the net.
Elsewhere, Oram defeated Rockcorry in Division 2B to move up to third place on Friday. Éire Óg got the better of Monaghan Harps on Friday to secure a semi-final place in Division Three, while the Smithborough men lost to Blackhill on Wednesday, allowing the championship runners-up to also advance to the last four.
The McGuinness brothers starred as Ballybay returned to winning ways in the Drumlin Group of Credit Unions Senior Football League at the expense of Castleblayney on Wednesday, as goals from Shane (two) and Christopher handed the county champions victory. Anthony Rooney scored the only major as Clontibret eased to victory against Carrickmacross, while Magheracloone dominated the second half against 14-man Doohamlet to run out comfortable winners, the goals coming from Tommy Freeman and James Hand.
A goal by Jack McCarron was the key score as Currin held off Drumhowan to join Truagh at the top of the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League, while neighbours Donaghmoyne and Inniskeen played out an entertaining draw.
Clontibret got off the mark in the Silver Hill Foods Senior Hurling League on Thursday when they drew with Truagh.
Emerald Sarsfields are through to the semi-finals of the Maguire Transport Minor Football Championship Division Three after they saw off Castleblayney on Thursday, as are Doohamlet, who got a walkover from Inniskeen.
GRM Minor Football League Division One leaders Carrickmacross fell to only their second defeat of the year away to Scotstown on Thursday. Scotstown are now in a three-way tie for second place along with Truagh and Monaghan Harps, who proved too strong for Emyvale. St. Patrick’s are through to the MFL Division Two semi-finals after they won their play-off against Killanny.
